• The longest side is the hypotenuse.
• The hypotenuse is always opposite the right angle.
• The theorem is used for finding lengths of sides.

Example: Calculate the length of c.

a2 + b2 = c2 Don't forget to
use brackets on
42 + 72 = c2
your calculator:

c = 8.06 cm (2 dp)

Example: Calculate the length of y.

Don't forget to
use brackets on

y2 + 72 = 92
J(92- 72)
