IX. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, c, or D on your answer sheet
to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
It is a common saying that we do not fully value a thing until we lose it. We often value
the love and worth of a friend when he has been taken from US by death more than when he
was with US in the flesh; it is only when we have left school or college that we understand
the greatness of our opportunity of education, which has gone forever; and it is the sick and
the ailing who realize the value of good health, when we are young and strong, we cannot
imagine what it is to be weak and ailing. We are so used to vigorous health that we take it
for granted. The organs of our body work so smoothly that we scarcely know we have lungs
and liver, heart and stomach. But when any of these gets upset and gives US pain and
sickness, we learn by bitter experience what an unspeakable blessing it is to be well.
Loss of health makes US miserable, and a burden to ourselves and our friends. It cripples
our efforts so that we cannot accomplish many of the good and great things we might have
done. It spoils our life. What must we do to keep our health?
We must be moderate in eating and drinking and wise in the choice of plain, wholesome
simple food. Gluttony has killed thousands, and strong drink tens of thousands. We must,
when young, get plenty of sleep, which is "nature's sweet restorer", and not try to burn the
candle at both ends. We must live as much as possible in the open air and keep our rooms
well ventilated. We must get sufficient and regular physical exercise, and keep our bodies
clean. And we must avoid bad habits and secret sins as we avoid the devil, and keep our
thoughts clean and our bodies pure. Our ideal must be the sound mind in the sound body.

Man is a land animal, but he also closely tied to the sea. Throughout history the sea has
served the needs of man. The sea has provided man with food and convenient way to travel
to many parts of the world. Today, nearly two thirds of the world's population lives within
80 kilometers of the sea coast.
In the modern technological world, the sea offers many resources to help mankind
survive. Resources on land are beginning to be used up. The sea, however, still can be
hoped to supply many man's needs. The list of riches of the sea yet to be developed by
man's technology is impressive. Oil and gas explorations have been carried out for nearly 30
years. Valuable amounts of minerals existing on the ocean floor are ready to be mined.
Fish farming promises to be a good way to produce large quantities of food. The culture
of fish and shellfish is an ancient skill practiced in the past mainly by Oriental people.
Besides oil and gas, the sea may offer new sources of energy. Experts believe that the
warm temperature of the ocean can be used in a way similar to the steam in a steamship.
Ocean currents and waves offer possible use as a source of energy.
Technology is enabling man to explore ever more deeply under the sea. The development
of strong, new materials has made this possible. The technology to harvest the sea continues
to improve. Experts believe that by the year 2020 the problems that prevent US from
exploiting fully the food, minerals, and energy source of the sea will be largely solved.

For many years, people believed that the cleverest animals after man were chimpanzees.
Now, however, there is proof that dolphins may be even cleverer than these big apes.
Although dolphins live in the sea, they are not fish. They are mammals. They are in many
ways, therefore, like human beings.
Dolphins have a simple language. They are able to talk to one another. It may be possible
for man to learn how to talk to dolphins, but this will not be easy because dolphins cannot
hear the kind of sounds man can make. If man wants to talk to dolphins, therefore, he will
have to make a third language which both he and the dolphins can understand.
Dolphins are also friendly towards man. They often follow ships. There are many stories
of dolphins guiding ships through difficult and dangerous waters.

IX. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, c, or D on your answer sheet
to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
Along with jogging and swimming, cycling is one of the best all-round forms of exercise.
It can help to increase your strength and energy, giving you more efficient muscles and
stronger heart. But increasing your strength is not the only advantage of cycling. Because
you're not carrying the weight of your body on your feet, it's a good form of exercise for
people with painful feet or backs. However, with all forms of exercise it's important to start
slowly and build up gently. Doing too much too quickly can damage muscles that aren't
used to working. If you have any doubts about taking up cycling for health reasons, talk to
your doctor and ask his/her advice.
Ideally you should be cycling at least two or three times a week. For the exercise to be
doing you good, you should get a little out of breath. Don't worry that if you begin to lose
your breath, it could be dangerous and there must be something wrong with your heart. This
is simply not true; shortness of breath shows that the exercise is having the right effect.
However, if you find you are in pain then you should stop and take a rest.

oral speech. When there is a language barrier, communication accomplished through sign
language in which motions stand for letters, words, and ideas. Tourists, the deaf, and the

Body language transmits ideas or thoughts by certain actions, either intentionally or
unintentionally. A wink can be a way of flirting or indicating that the party is only joking. A
nod signifies approval, while shaking the head indicates a negative reaction. Other forms of
nonlinguistic language can be found in Braille (a system of raised dots read with the
fingertips), signal flags, Morse code, and smoke signals. Road maps and picture signs also

Do you ever give excuses that are not really true? when and why? It seems that
everybody tells lies - well, not big lies, but what we call "white lies". The only real
questions are about we lie and who we tell lies to. A recent study found that in conversation
people frequently stretch the truth. Here are some ways they do it.
People often lie because want to hide something from someone. For example, a son
doesn't tell his parents that he is dating a girl because he doesn't think they will like her.
Instead, he says he is going out with the guys. Sometimes people lie because they don't want
to do something. For example, someone invites you to a party. You think it will be boring so
you say that are busy you can't come.
Often we stretch the truth to make someone feel good. For example, your friend cooks
dinner for you, but it tastes terrible. Do you say so? No! You probably say "Hmm, this is
delicious!" Other times we don't want to tell someone bad news. For example, you have just
had a bad day at work, but you don't want to talk about it. So, if someone asks about your
day, you just say everything was fine. Telling "white lies" isn't really bad. Most of the time
people do it because they want to protect a friendship.

Shaking hands originated in medieval times. In those days, when a man came on a

laid aside. Then the two parties extended their right hands to show they had no weapons,
and clasped them. This was the beginning of the handshake.

Although they are an inexpensive supplier of vitamins, minerals, and high- quality
protein, eggs also contain a high level of blood cholesterol, one of the major causes of heart
diseases. One egg yolk, in fact, contains a little more than two- thirds of the suggested daily
cholesterol limit. This knowledge has driven egg sales to plummet in recent years, which in
turn has brought about the development of several alternatives to eating regular eggs. One
alternative is to eat substitute eggs. These eggs substitutes are not really eggs, but they look
somewhat like eggs when they are cooked. They have the advantage of having low
cholesterol rates, and they can be scrambled or used in banking. One disadvantage,
however, is that they are not good for frying, poaching, or boiling. A second alternative to
regular eggs is a new type of egg, sometimes called "designer" eggs. These eggs are
produced by hens that are fed low- flat diets consisting of ingredients such as canola oil,
flax, and rice bran. In spite of their diet, however, these hens produce eggs that contain the
same amount of cholesterol as regular eggs. Yet, the producers of these eggs claim that
eating their eggs will not raise the blood cholesterol in humans.
Eggs producers claim that their product has been portrayed unfairly. They cite scientific
studies to back up their claim. And, in fact, studies on the relationship between eggs and
human cholesterol levels have brought mixed results. It may be that is not the type of eggs
that is the main determinant of cholesterol but the person who is eating the eggs. Some
people may be more sensitive to cholesterol derived from food than other people. In fact,
there is evidence that certainly dietary fats stimulate the body's production of blood
cholesterol. Consequently, while it still makes sense to limit one's intake of eggs, even
designer eggs, it seems that doing this without regulating dietary fat will probably not help
reduce the blood cholesterol level.
