S4E2.b. Develop a model based on observations to describe the repeating pattern of the phases of
the moon (new, crescent, quarter, gibbous, and full).
ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: What would you like students to know and be
able to do by the end of this lesson:
Empowered Learner – Element 1.1.c. Students
use technology to seek feedback that informs Students will be able to identify and describe the
and improves their practice and to demonstrate different phases of the moon as well as describe
their learning in a variety of ways. why they occur.
Students will understand the phases of the moon and why they occur. Students will be able to
identify and describe the different moon phases.
How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:
X Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the
student and mostly practice based.
☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic
of learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The
teacher facilitates the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.
☐ Problem-based (Real world problems) and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems
and completing projects to demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared
outside of the classroom. (Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the
school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another
class, or publishing it via an outside source.)
This is a teacher-led lesson designed for students to learn and apply their knowledge about the
moon phases. To start, I will give a brief overview of the lesson and activities that will be completed.

Following shortly after, I will state the goals and objectives of the lesson and write them on the
board for students to see. I will present students with the Padlet assignment I created and together,
we will go over the directions for completing it. Before starting the assignment, students will have
the opportunity to ask questions or state any concerns. Student will then go to my created Padlet
named “4th Grade Earth and Space Science: The Moon Phases.” Students will see all the steps that
will need to be completed laid out in order. Students will see an initial question stating what they
will be learning about – students can like or comment on this, but it is not required. Students will
then move to the “Start Here!” category and watch the interactive BrainPOP video about the moon
phases. This video provides students with pause points so that they can review their learning as they
go. Next, students will read a short article provided by National Geographic Kids to further
understand the moon phases and why the moon “changes shape” each night. After completing
these two activities, students will participate in a discussion board reflecting on what they have
learned as well as what they already knew. Students will listen to the Phases of the Moon rap by Mr.
Lee. Students will then travel to the Quizzizz assessment to apply their knowledge of what they
learned from the lesson activities. Lastly, students will be presented with an Exit Ticket before
completing the assignment. As students are working, I will walk around the classroom to observe,
answer questions, and provide feedback as needed.
The tools for this lesson support both passive and active learning. Students will listen to videos and
read articles to gain knowledge; however, they will then apply their knowledge through discussions
and Quizzizz. Students are required to discuss and present their thoughts, ideas, wonderings, and
questions. Students will participate in class engagement through the discussion assignment as well
as the Exit Ticket. If students have questions regarding the Padlet activities, they are welcome to ask
a classmate for help before asking me for additional help. As I walk around the classroom, I will make
sure that all students are on task and haven’t lost focus. By providing students with short videos and
articles rather than lengthy ones, they are more likely to stay engaged.
This lesson idea supports the Engagement principle of UDL as students are required to discuss their
thoughts, ideas, and questions in a discussion format on Padlet. Students will be able to view each
other’s posts as well as like and comment on them. Additionally, students will complete a Quizzizz
assessment which is an interactive tool that acts as an educational game where students can
“compete” against each other.
Reflective Practice:
I do believe that Padlet and the activities assigned will help students build understanding in a wat
that they could not do with traditional tool. This Padlet keeps students on task by providing short,
interactive activities such as videos and articles. Students will remain engaged by encouraging
conversation/discussion posts for classmates to view. I look forward to seeing what questions
students have about the moon phases by completing the exit ticket.
