and folded her hands in her lap. She dozed and listened and something suddenly began to happen. The
old lady was beginning to change, her gray wrinkles and lines were slowly dimming away. As she sat
in the chair she was growing younger. Her thin fragile body was getting filled with youth again. Her
hair thickened and darkened and her arms filled too turning into a rich hue as it had once been years
ago. She felt very good, she felt a warmness inside her cold body for the first time in years. She had
become a women of thirty, with plump arms, legs and red lips. When bubber read for her again on
Wednesday, she once again felt the youngness flow within her but this time it was much stronger. The
feel of such rich life made her dizzy and unsteady. She was blooming again and swelling into
richness. Once again she had become young , and she smiled with firm teeth and gums with red lips
and white teeth and this time it did seem to go away.

of the house was overgrown with weeds that rustled and chattered in the wind. The house itself was a

rocking chair on the porch with a torn piece of cloth hanging over it. As Bubber went up, he stepping
on noisy rickety steps. He could smell the wonderful warm cookies and his mouth began to water.
Bubber turned the handle of the bell which rang very rustily on the other side of the door. After going
in and into the kitchen, bubber could see the cookies resting on a big blue plate on the top of the stove,
that came up warm and fresh from the oven.

3. Explain the symbolism of the omnibus In the poem and the imagery in the 2 nd stanza

As the speaker tries to bring himself back to reality due to the appalling question asked by the
landlady “how dark?”. The Speaker brings an image of a Red double-tiered Omnibus squelching tar to
the readers mind. This image paints the picture of an omnibus that is a symbol of colonial England
making the tar bellow it squelch which symbolizes the way in which England treated the black men of
their country, making them “squelch” meaning suppressed or silenced. The Image is the perfect
representation of the landlady who ask the question “how dark?” , “are you light or very dark?” The
Imagery used in the 2nd stanza is brought about as a reaction to the shocking questions asked by the
landlady. He therefore needs to ground himself to reality and thus looks around him. He sees Multiple
buttons “button a” , “button b”, and also smells the stench of rancid breath of the public who have also
used the telephone booth. The Poet also mentions the color red in repetition as visually he can see a
red booth, a red pillar-box and a red Omnibus , while mentally he can see red due to his anger towards
the land lady. The sound of the squelching tar symbolizes the suffering of the black men of the
country.

4. How does the speaker get revenge on the landlady?

As the speaker now knew that he had no chance of getting the house, he wanted a fun payback for the
racism she brought upon him. By Saying that his skin color was “West African sepia” he confused the
lady who did not know about the color sepia. Furthermore, he added credibility to this by saying that
it is just as it says on his passport. All her previous “Fanciness and royalty” of a voice with a liptop
coasted, long gold-rolled cigarette-holder pipped was now gone, truthfulness changed her accent.
Yelling onto the mouth peace the land lady conceded saying that she didn’t know what that was.
When the speaker replied “that color is like brunette” the landlady yelling she said “THAT DARK
ISNT IT. The speaker cleverly said that facially he is brunette but the test of him like the palm of his
hands, the sole of his feet were peroxide blonde. Joking even more, The speaker said that due to all
the friction of sitting down it has turned his bottom raven black. This caused the landlady to get very
angry and her receiver was rearing on the thunderclap, when the speaker slightly flirtatiously said
“wouldn’t you rather see for yourself”.
