ME LABORATORY 1

EXPERIMENT NO. 1
DETERMINING DENSITY, SPECIFIC WEIGHT AND SPECIFIC GRAVITY OF
LIQUID FUELS
Objectives of the Experiment:
This experiment is to be conducted for the students to be familiarized with the density, specific weight,
specific gravity, and viscosity of liquid fuels, to understand its concepts and application.

Materials:
Digital Weighing Scale/Weighing Scale
Measuring Cup (1 L/1000 cc max)
1 L Gasoline
1 L Diesel
1 L Kerosene
Camera for video recording and documentation
Calculator for computations

Note:
1. Be careful in handling liquid fuels. Do not horseplay; do not mix with other substances. DO NOT
SMOKE while performing the experiment. Make sure that the measuring cup/graduated cup is empty
and dry before measuring other substances/liquid fuel.
2. Do not dispose liquid fuel in any drain or kitchen sink. Dispose properly. Look for safe disposal in your
areas or ask help from where you have purchased the said liquid fuels or car repair shops in terms of
disposing it (gasoline, diesel)

Procedure:
DENSITY:
1. Measure the tare weight of the measuring cup. The tare weight of the measuring cup should be
subtracted from the mass of the measuring cup with liquid in it for accurate results.

2. Measure the mass of the substance when it is 250 mL, 500 mL, 750 mL, and 1000 mL. Write the values
on the table given. On your experiment set up, indicate what is the type of liquid that is weighed, for
clearer documentation.
3. Compute for the density of each liquid by dividing the weight of the substance by the corresponding
measured volume. Units should be in kg/cubic meter. Show your solution.

SPECIFIC WEIGHT:
1. For the computed density of each, get the specific weight by multiplying the density with acceleration
due to gravity. Units should be in N/cubic meter. Show your solution.

SPECIFIC GRAVITY:
1. The density of liquid fuels and water has been determined. Compute for the specific gravity of each
fuel. Show your solution.
