FEDERAL PRISON
Robert Stroud, better known to the public as the "Birdman of Alcatraz", was
transferred to Alcatraz in 1942. He spent the next 17 years on "the Rock," six of
them in segregation in D Block and one in the prison hospital. In 1959 he was
transferred to the Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Missouri
(MCFP Springfield).
When Al Capone arrived at Alcatraz in 1934, prison officials made it clear that he
would not receive any preferential treatment. While serving time in Atlanta, the
gangster still controlled most of his businesses by purchasing the guards. During
his stay at Alcatraz, he was a prisoner of psychological torture caused by the rule
of silence where no one would speak unless an American officer did so first,
leaving the place with an inhuman and torturous atmosphere. "Big Al" generated
incredible media attention although he only stayed there for four and a half years
before contracting tertiary syphilis and being admitted to the prison hospital.
James "Whitey" Bulger spent 3 years in Alcatraz ( 1959-1962 ) serving time for
bank robbery. There he became a close friend of Clarence Carnes, known as
the Choctaw Kid.
San Francisco, January 1960, a boat arrives at Alcatraz Island carrying Frank Morris ,
a new prisoner to the maximum security prison after having managed to escape from
other prisons. After passing several searches, a doctor arrives and examines him
before locking him in his cell; The first person he meets is the one they call Tornasol
because of the changing color of his skin when the temperature changes, who has a pet
mouse that he feeds and takes with him everywhere.
In the dining room he also sees Wolf , who observes him and shows him how tough he
is by letting a match go out between his fingers, then he is called by Warden (the
warden) to his office where he explains that when he doesn't If you comply with the
rules of society, they send you to prison and when you do not comply with the rules
of the prison, they send you to Alcatraz , a true fortress very different from any other
prison where the prisoners remained in individual cells and from where, he assures
him, no one He has never managed to escape, assuring him that he is invulnerable.
At the same time, he also informs him that good behavior is not rewarded there, nor
are they allowed to have knowledge of what happens outside, although they can
receive two visits a month. The Warden asks him, do you have the names of those
people? to visit him?, also warning him that they would also be investigated, Morris
not proposing any name.
Later, in the showers he has to deal with Lobo , who after standing next to him tells
him that he is looking for a new young man (player) and that he has been the chosen
one, to which Morris hits him hard, ending up putting his fist in him. soap in the
mouth.
After what happened in the showers, Morris is later asked by one of the guards to
collaborate by distributing books and magazines throughout the cells, where he meets
English, the manager of the library, a black man who seems tough, with the one who
will then speak in the patio, where he seems to be the leader of the colored prisoners,
asking him about the possibilities of escape that exist, explaining that Alcatraz is
different from any other prison, since it has one guard for every three prisoners, and
They know each other's customs, the bars being reinforced, there is no possibility of
digging a tunnel either, since the island is pure rock, and, even if they managed to
escape, they would have to swim more than a mile between strong currents and in icy
waters, with inmates being counted 12 times a day.
Later, he also meets "Doc" in the patio, a guy who dedicates his free time to painting,
and who warns him to be careful with Lobo , because he will end up hurting him, and
undoubtedly, a few days later he is attacked by Lobo while He is in the courtyard,
although thanks to Doc he is unable to surprise him, managing to defend himself, and,
although he was the one attacked, they order the two to go to block D , to the
punishment cells, remaining confined in a cell that is dark and where they are They
wash with a jet of pressurized water, thus passing the days one after the other and all
the same.
When he gets out he meets Charlie Butts , a new inmate who tells him that he came
there because he was a car thief , and that when he got out of prison he stole the car
from a guard who made his life impossible.
Moments later the Warden appears on the scene and without any support revokes the
privilege of painting Doc after discovering a portrait of him in his cell. By then Morris
has gotten a job in the carpentry shop, and witnesses how Doc , disgusted and helpless
to learn that He would spend the rest of his sentence without the privilege of not being
able to continue painting, which is what kept him excited. He decided to make a radical
decision that led him to mutilate the fingers of his hand with an ax while doing work in
the workshop. of carpentry, it is observed in the film that after what happened, before
doing so, he places a flower on his pants like the one he had previously drawn in his
self-portrait.
Once the bad moment is over, in his cell one day he observes a cockroach coming out
of the ventilation grill, from which he gets an idea, observing that the concrete there is
less hard due to the action of the saltpeter.
The next day, two old friends whom Morris met in the Atlanta prison , the brothers
John and Clarence Anglin, also arrive among the new prisoners, and with whom he
chooses to prepare the escape, Butts joins them after learning from his wife that Their
mother has only a few weeks left to live, they immediately begin to prepare
everything, thinking of fleeing at night, when they spend the longest period without
controls, having to equip themselves with tools for this, in addition to having to get
raincoats and glue to make a raft with them. which they will flee, not towards San
Francisco , but towards another nearby island, in the opposite direction.
They end up making a digging tool with the handle of a spoon that they steal from the
dining room that they weld to a piece of nail clippers, also making a wedge in the
workshop to be able to pop out the bolts that hold the grates. Charlie pretends that he
likes paint like Doc and gets the tubes that will be used to, then make a false head with
pieces of newspaper, paint it as if it were them, also getting hair from the hair salon to
glue on the head, to So then, with the doll replacing him in the bed, so that Morris can
calmly go out at night towards the air ducts and investigate the best way to escape
until he reaches an exit that he cannot reach alone, since they are bars that are in high,
so the next day he goes up with John Anglin.
One of the many ordinary days that passed in the prison, the Warden notices in the
dining room one of the chrysanthemums that Doc was caring for and points out that
it contravenes the regulations, so he crushes it, to which Tornasol rushes towards
him, although She has a heart attack before she can get close to him.
They ignore that the Warden , informed of the friendship that exists between Butts
and Morris , orders that they change cells, pointing out that they will do so on Tuesday
morning, precisely the day they have chosen to escape, although at night, Wolf also
leaves. of the isolation cells, which would jeopardize the purpose of carrying out the
escape, so, to avoid incidents, they decide to advance it one day.
Despite everything, Lobo tries to carry out his revenge by attacking him in the patio,
although in that case he is prevented by English , who does not want to see his friend's
escape frustrated, so, with everything prepared, they decide to advance the escape,
which will be carried out that night, leaving the brothers Anglin and Morris , because
Butts gets nervous and when he finally decides to flee it is too late and the others are
already too far ahead and he cannot reach the exit from the roof alone, so he must
return to his cell.
Meanwhile, the other three fugitives run across the roofs, then sliding down pipes and
then jumping over a wire fence, managing to escape from the prison, then heading to
the beach, where they inflate the improvised rafts before leaving for the sea. When in
the morning they discover that Morris is not in his cell, they set off all the alarms and
immediately begin their search around the island and the San Francisco Bay ,
although the only thing they find is a bag with photos of one of the Anglins , doubting
If they drowned, a thesis from the Warden , or what they tried to do was leave false
clues.
They also find a chrysanthemum and throw it into the water, assuring that those
flowers do not grow there before receiving a call from the director general of prisons
from Washington . The Anglins and Morris were searched en masse without success,
and that hitherto impregnable prison was closed a little less than a year later.
