SCIENTIFIC NAME: Synadenium grantii (Currently according to The Plant List: Euphorbia
umbellata).
SYNONYMS: Euphorbia pseudograntii, Synadenium umbellatum.
VARIETIES: Synadenium grantii 'Rubra'
Synadenium grantii is a species of succulent plant in the
Euphorbiaceae family. The specific epithet is in honor of the
explorer James Augustus Grant. It was originally described by
Daniel Oliver in 1875. The plant has the common name of the
African Milkweed because of the white latex that it releases
when any cut is made.
It is a succulent shrub native to the east-central region of Africa.
In nature, plants reach up to 12 feet (over 3.5 m) in height, with
equal distribution. It is pale green and has slightly toothed leaves.

to a light gray bark. They are easy to grow and are resistant. The
milky sap is very corrosive and can cause contact dermatitis.
It is a beautiful ornamental plant, both the type species (green)
