Instruction: Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow by choosing
the most appropriate of the options Letter A – E (Nos 1 -10)
Yeast is a tiny plant found everywhere on the earth except in the middle of the oceans and in
deserts. It can be found on decaying fruits, on trees and on insects. Yeast plants differ from other plants.
Green plants make their own food; but yeast plant do not. They feed on sugar but the sugar must first be
mixed with water. Then the yeast can breakdown the sugar.
Have you ever wondered how, why bread rises? The baker mixes the yeast cake with a small
amount of warm water. He puts this mixture into the bread dough. The tough sticky dough is moist and
warm, so everything is just right for the yeast plant to grow. The yeast uses the sugar for food and this helps
it to grow.
As it grows, the bread rises. Yeast plants grow in a strange way. A bud or lump grows out to forms
another yeast plant. In turn, this new plant sends out a bud. Soon, there is a whole chain of yeast plant. The
chain breaks, each plant starts a new chain. In a short time numerous yeast plants are formed. This is of
course, beginning. The plants continue to use the sugar and to grow. The baker has to put the bread dough
in the oven. While in the oven, the bread dough continues to rise. It stops when the heat has killed off all
