Peruvian Paso Horse
To study the paso horse of our days it is necessary to go back to its ancestor,
the Spanish horse and particularly that of Andalusia, since this horse gave rise
to our typical steed. Although it is true that Arab blood runs through the veins of
our equine specimen, it is very rarely expressed today, highlighting the Berber
breed that is ethnologically most represented in the Peruvian horse.
The horse breed native to Spain can be classified into three types:
The Spanish type itself,
The Andalusian Berber type and
The jaca or hacanea type.
The most discussed aspect when it comes to our horse has been its gait. There
have been no precise explanations regarding its most notable characteristics
and we can say that the gait or movement that our horse has is original or
special and constitutes a racial characteristic. We can state that the original
quality of the Peruvian horse is typical of our breed, since, although the gait is
certainly the origin of what is called the “flat step”, we only find it in some breeds
or as a notable characteristic of some mestizos.
Most horses in the world move diagonally, meaning that the front and rear hoof
on the opposite side are raised at the same time while the other two are resting
on the ground waiting for the next move to change direction. members, what is
known as “trotting”.
The movement of the Peruvian Paso horse is original, natural and also directed
by man: it moves mainly laterally, that is, the front and rear hoof on the same
side slide at the same pace. This is called “gait.” ” or “amble.”
The Peruvian Paso horse is used in the three regions of the country and is a
very useful animal. It is not only a tireless collaborator in field work, but also a
controller of pests and diseases, irrigation, failures in germination or the attack
of an insect that destroys the plants and is also a means of getting closer to the
plants. great communication routes to the most remote production centers of
our country. It is worth mentioning that there are large estates that are traveled
on horseback, saving time on daily journeys, giving comfort to the rider.
Passing 1000 meters above sea level, throughout our territory, the horse
generally constitutes a means of transportation between small towns and
hamlets, this intercommunication intensifying when the houses are separated
and further away. of agricultural and livestock areas. Likewise, it is used as an
element of communication and transportation of people, small animals and
food, which are taken to the markets of populated centers where farmers and
small producers travel to those places to carry out their commercial operations.

The Peruvian Horse is a horse that, due to its physical characteristics, is ideal
for horseback riding or traveling. It is a shame that currently their use and
breeding are also mostly intended to be presented in competitions. That is to
say, in recent years its aesthetic qualities began to be prioritized over its
benefits as a horse. This is an animal with strong legs, hard hooves and an
incredible ability to endure work. This is why by prioritizing issues related to its
beauty in walking, other of its main qualities are wasted. This is perhaps
understandable due to the elegance of its perfect, rhythmic and harmonious
clicking of heels when walking, making the rider almost not perceive its
movements. The center of gravity of these horses usually remains almost
motionless. “Term” is what the rotation of its members in each beat is called.
Many times the coordination of the legs of a Peruvian Paso horse is compared
to the strides of a professional swimmer since the coordination between four
limbs is perfect, to achieve perfect control and center of gravity, as previously
mentioned. These characteristics of the horse, combined with its tranquility as
an equine, make the paso horse a very artistic and expressive animal, and for
these reasons it has become cultural heritage of Peru for more than seven
years. These unique characteristics cause great pride in Peruvians, and it has
even been exported to many countries, with these Peruvian horse clubs passing
on to our breed, recognizing them as such, that is, Peruvians.
Export of Peruvian Paso Horses.-
Currently, the export of Peruvian Paso horses is carried out on a considerable
scale to various countries in the world. Today we can say that this animal is
found in more than twenty countries in the world, especially in the United
States, Switzerland, Germany, Canada, Mexico, Panama. , Colombia,
Argentina, Ecuador, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala
among others.
As a consequence of the same, Associations of Breeders of Peruvian Paso
Horses have been generated in all these countries, as well as Genealogical
Registries and that they depend on the Peruvian Genealogical Registry. On the
other hand, in order to preserve our best animals, the National Association of
Breeders and Owners of Peruvian Paso Horses and the Ministry of Agriculture
have established the Breed Registry, by which the export of animals is not
allowed except under certain conditions. , but unfortunately not all of them are
fulfilled.
