THE WORK REASONS OF FIVE WAREHOUSE EMPLOYEES

The following comments have been made by warehouse employees of

a large commercial area, in relation to the work they do.

If you analyze them from Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory, you

will see that each employee aims to satisfy a certain type of needs with
their work: PHYSIOLOGICAL, SECURITY, SOCIAL, ESTEEM OR SELF-
ACTUALIZATION

Comment from warehouse employees

- ALFREDO: “What am I looking for in a job? Well that has changed

over time. Before starting to work here, I didn't care about working
on one thing or another; The only thing I was looking for was
something that would allow me to feed my children. Now what
interests me most is to continue working here, ensuring job
stability.”
- ANGEL: “Well look, I'm not just looking for a place that only
provides me with a salary; For better or worse, at work I spend many
hours a day and, that is why I seek to work in a place where there is
a good atmosphere, good colleagues, where you are a person and not
just another number.”
- PEDRO: “The truth is that above all I care that my work is
recognized and that I feel comfortable with myself, with what I do.
Although others consider my work not very creative or interesting, I
am proud of what I do and I would like others to recognize what I do
well.
- CARLOS: “My goal is to find a job that allows me to develop the
potential that I think I have; that allows me to be creative; that
presents me with difficulties that force me to make an effort and
develop new things and this, in turn, allows me to perfect myself. In
my current job, I feel underutilized and sometimes frustrated”
- MANUEL: “I am already 64 years old. I've been doing this job for 20
years. My bones are resentful of constantly carrying weight, but I
have to keep doing it, since neither my wife nor my children bring any
money into the house and we have to eat.”

PRACTICAL CASE HERZBERG'S MOTIVATION THEORY

On a radio station, an interview was conducted with an important figure in

Spanish football. The statements made by the footballer during the
interview are transcribed below. If you analyze the interview from the
perspective of Herzberg's motivation theory, you will see that each of the
reasons refers to a type of factor.

“I love my profession: in fact I am truly privileged because I make a living

(and not a bad one at that) doing something that amuses me and is what I
have wanted to do all my life. But since this club signed me I have been
bitter and I think I have reasons for it:

a) The coach has an extremely sour temperament; He insults us

when we don't do what he wants; He does not give us any
explanation when he does not have any of us to play, he airs
internal problems in the press instead of discussing them with
us.
b) We have not received our salaries for two months, without any
explanation. However, the field fills up every Sunday.
c) They constantly interfere in private life. There is even a
private detective who monitors my actions.
d) We always make trips to other cities by bus because it is
cheaper, making trips of 15 and 20 hours in a row.
e) The team as a whole is not playing well. We do not have the
sporting success that I expected.
f) My companions turn their backs on me; They say that with
what they pay me I would have to win the games on my own.
g) When I get a good match, instead of acknowledging it, the
coach says it's my obligation and that's what they pay me for.
h) I think that this team does not give me what I need: to
progress in the football world. I know that I can access better
teams and perhaps for next season, I will accept an offer
from them.

TO Relationships
b Economic factors
c Security
d Labor conditions
AND Major responsibility
F Social factors
g Recognition of a job well done
h Feeling of self-actualization
