Report On Visiting M.

G University

The Visit to the M.G University was done as part of the three day workshop on
nanomaterials and nanoscience – Nanoquest 2024 conducted by DevaMatha College
Kuravilangadu. The Visit was offered by the former Vice-chancellor and an eminent figure
in the field of nanoscience Dr. Sabu Thomas at the inaugural Function of the NanoQuest
2024. The visit was scheduled at the afternoon of second day. The group had 24 students
who came from 5 different colleges and 4 coordinators of Nanoquest. The group arrived at
M.G University at 2 PM.

The School Of Pure and Applied

Physics
The first destination of visit was the school of pure and applied physics. There the students had been
explained to the working of three different characterization analysis devices. The students were
divided in three groups and sent to learn about different devices. The first on was Transmission
Electron Microscope (TEM). The Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) at MG University is a
state-of-the-art device housed in a specially designed room equipped with advanced technological
features. The TEM device utilizes a beam of electrons to illuminate the specimen and create an
image magnified up to 1,000,000 times. The device operates under high vacuum conditions and
allows for the visualization of samples at the nanoscale level.

Key Features of TEM:

1. High Magnification: The TEM device at MG University can achieve magnifications

up to 1,000,000 times, providing detailed images of specimens at the atomic level.
2. Resolution: With a resolution of 0.1 nanometers, the TEM device can capture even
the smallest details of the specimen.
3. Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS): The TEM is equipped with an Energy
Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy system that allows for the analysis of the elemental
composition of the specimen.
4. Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM): The TEM device can perform
STEM, allowing for the analysis of the specimen's internal structure at the atomic
level.
5. Diffraction Analysis: It can also perform diffraction analysis, which is crucial for
crystallography and material science research.
6. Edax Analysis: It can also perform edax analysis, which is used for identifying the
elements in the specimen. Note: we should not use specimen of copper for edax
because the chamber is made up of copper and the edax will always show a peak
for copper element.

Applications:

• Nanotechnology Research: The TEM device is instrumental in nanotechnology

research, enabling scientists to observe and analyze nanomaterials and
nanostructures.
• Material Science: In the field of material science, the TEM device is used to study
the microstructure of materials, including metals, polymers, and ceramics.
• Biology and Medicine: TEM is used in the field of biology and medicine to study
biological samples, including cells, viruses, and proteins, at the nanoscale level.
• Chemistry: In chemistry, the TEM device is used to analyze the atomic structure of
various compounds and molecules.

The second device visited was Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM). The Vibrating
Sample Magnetometer (VSM) at MG University is a state-of-the-art device housed in a
specially designed room equipped with advanced technological features. The VSM device
measures the magnetization of a sample as a function of magnetic field, temperature, and
time. The VSM is used commonly at 6-9 Tesla. It has a big super magnet at the bottom
and the sample is placed inside a probe using sample holder and moved vertically
between the magnetic field of the magnet which cause disruption in the magnetic field and
give readings accordingly.

Key Features:

1. High Sensitivity: The VSM device at MG University offers high sensitivity, making it
capable of detecting even small changes in magnetization.
2. Wide Temperature Range: With a temperature range from cryogenic temperatures
up to several hundred degrees Celsius, the VSM device can perform measurements
under various conditions.
3. Rapid Data Acquisition: The VSM device is equipped with rapid data acquisition
capabilities, allowing for quick and efficient measurements.
4. Accurate Measurement: It provides accurate measurement of magnetic properties
such as magnetization, coercivity, and magnetic susceptibility.

2
Applications:

• Material Characterization: The VSM device is widely used in material science

research for the characterization of magnetic materials, including ferromagnetic,
antiferromagnetic, and paramagnetic materials.
• Permanent Magnet Testing: In the field of magnet development, the VSM device is
used for the testing and characterization of permanent magnets.
• Thin Film Analysis: VSM is used to study the magnetic properties of thin films, which
are crucial in various technological applications.
• Nanotechnology Research: In nanotechnology, the VSM device is used to measure
the magnetic properties of nanostructured materials, including nanoparticles and
thin films.

The third visit was to the Single Crystal X-ray Difractometer. The Single Crystal X-Ray
Diffractometer (SCXRD) at MG University is a state-of-the-art device housed in a specially
designed room equipped with advanced technological features. The SCXRD device utilizes
X-ray diffraction to determine the crystal structure of a single crystal.

Key Features:

1. High Precision: The SCXRD device at MG University offers high precision, providing
detailed information about the crystal structure, including bond lengths, bond
angles, and atomic positions.
2. Wide Angle Range: With a wide angle range, the SCXRD device can collect
diffraction data over a large range of scattering angles.
3. Data Collection Speed: The SCXRD device is equipped with rapid data collection
capabilities, allowing for quick and efficient structure determination.
4. Accurate Measurement: It provides accurate measurement of crystallographic
parameters, which is crucial for the study of materials in various scientific
disciplines.

Applications:

• Crystallography: The SCXRD device is widely used in crystallography for the

determination of crystal structures of various materials, including inorganic and
organic compounds.

3
• Chemistry: In the field of chemistry, the SCXRD device is used to study the
molecular structure of chemical compounds, aiding in the understanding of chemical
bonding and reactivity.
• Material Science: SCXRD is used in material science research for the
characterization of materials, including metals, ceramics, and semiconductors.
• Biology and Medicine: In the field of biology and medicine, the SCXRD device is
used to determine the structure of biological macromolecules, such as proteins and
nucleic acids.

The School of Energy Materials

The next stop of the visit was the physics lab and chemistry lab of school of energy
materials and the school of nanoscience and technology. The labs had different highly
sophisticated instruments which are very useful in the higher studies in the field of energy
materials and nanoscience. The lab had Electron Spin Coater, Fume hoods, Mechanical
stirrer, vertical sonicator etc.

We express our gratitude to the staff and management of MG University for providing us
with the opportunity to visit their facilities and for their insightful demonstration.
