An essay is a focused piece of writing designed to inform or persuade. There are many
different types of essay, but they are often defined in four categories: argumentative,
expository, narrative, and descriptive essays.

Argumentative and expository essays are focused on conveying information and making clear
points, while narrative and descriptive essays are about exercising creativity and writing in an
interesting way. At university level, argumentative essays are the most common type.

Argumentative essays
An argumentative essay presents an extended, evidence-based argument. It requires a strong
thesis statement—a clearly defined stance on your topic. Your aim is to convince the reader
of your thesis using evidence (such as quotations) and analysis.

Argumentative essays test your ability to research and present your own position on a topic.
This is the most common type of essay at college level—most papers you write will involve
some kind of argumentation.

The essay is divided into an introduction, body, and conclusion:

Its prevalence among students is not exaggerated; a survey found that the vast majority of the
students surveyed used Wikipedia (Head & Eisenberg, 2010). An article in The Guardian

stresses a common objection to its use: “a reliance on Wikipedia can discourage students from
engaging with genuine academic writing” (Coomer, 2013). Teachers are clearly not mistaken in
viewing Wikipedia usage as ubiquitous among their students; but the claim that it discourages
engagement with academic sources requires further investigation. This point is treated as self-
evident by many teachers, but Wikipedia itself explicitly encourages students to look into
other sources. Its articles often provide references to academic publications and include
warning notes where citations are missing; the site’s own guidelines for research make clear
that it should be used as a starting point, emphasizing that users should always “read the
references and check whether they really do support what the article says”
(“Wikipedia:Researching with Wikipedia,” 2020). Indeed, for many students, Wikipedia is
their first encounter with the concepts of citation and referencing. The use of Wikipedia
therefore has a positive side that merits deeper consideration than it often receives.

Expository essays
An expository essay provides a clear, focused explanation of a topic. It doesn’t require an
original argument, just a balanced and well-organized view of the topic.

Expository essays test your familiarity with a topic and your ability to organize and convey
information. They are commonly assigned at high school or in exam questions at college level.

The introduction of an expository essay states your topic and provides some general
background, the body presents the details, and the conclusion summarizes the information
presented.

The invention of the printing press in 1440 changed this situation dramatically. Johannes
Gutenberg, who had worked as a goldsmith, used his knowledge of metals in the design of the
press. He made his type from an alloy of lead, tin, and antimony, whose durability allowed for
the reliable production of high-quality books. This new technology allowed texts to be
reproduced and disseminated on a much larger scale than was previously possible. The
Gutenberg Bible appeared in the 1450s, and a large number of printing presses sprang up
across the continent in the following decades. Gutenberg’s invention rapidly transformed
cultural production in Europe; among other things, it would lead to the Protestant
Reformation.

Narrative essays
A narrative essay is one that tells a story. This is usually a story about a personal experience
you had, but it may also be an imaginative exploration of something you have not
experienced.

Narrative essays test your ability to build up a narrative in an engaging, well-structured way.
They are much more personal and creative than other kinds of academic writing. Writing a
personal statement for an application requires the same skills as a narrative essay.

A narrative essay isn’t strictly divided into introduction, body, and conclusion, but it should
still begin by setting up the narrative and finish by expressing the point of the story—what
you learned from your experience, or why it made an impression on you.

Since elementary school, I have always favored subjects like science and math over the
humanities. My instinct was always to think of these subjects as more solid and serious than
classes like English. If there was no right answer, I thought, why bother? But recently I had an
experience that taught me my academic interests are more flexible than I had thought: I took
my first philosophy class.

Before I entered the classroom, I was skeptical. I waited outside with the other students and
wondered what exactly philosophy would involve—I really had no idea. I imagined something
pretty abstract: long, stilted conversations pondering the meaning of life. But what I got was
something quite different.

A young man in jeans, Mr. Jones—“but you can call me Rob”—was far from the white-haired,
buttoned-up old man I had half-expected. And rather than pulling us into pedantic
arguments about obscure philosophical points, Rob engaged us on our level. To talk free will,
we looked at our own choices. To talk ethics, we looked at dilemmas we had faced ourselves.
By the end of class, I’d discovered that questions with no right answer can turn out to be the
most interesting ones.

The experience has taught me to look at things a little more “philosophically”—and not just
because it was a philosophy class! I learned that if I let go of my preconceptions, I can actually
get a lot out of subjects I was previously dismissive of. The class taught me—in more ways
than one—to look at things with an open mind.

Descriptive essays
A descriptive essay provides a detailed sensory description of something. Like narrative
essays, they allow you to be more creative than most academic writing, but they are more
tightly focused than narrative essays. You might describe a specific place or object, rather
than telling a whole story.

Descriptive essays test your ability to use language creatively, making striking word choices
to convey a memorable picture of what you’re describing.

A descriptive essay can be quite loosely structured, though it should usually begin by
introducing the object of your description and end by drawing an overall picture of it. The
important thing is to use careful word choices and figurative language to create an original
description of your object.

On Sunday afternoons I like to spend my time in the garden behind my house. The garden is

the feel of the grass on my feet, the gentle activity of the fish in the pond beside me.

My cat crosses the garden nimbly and leaps onto the fence to survey it from above. From his
perch he can watch over his little kingdom and keep an eye on the neighbours. He does this
until the barking of next door’s dog scares him from his post and he bolts for the cat flap to
govern from the safety of the kitchen.

Textual analysis essays


Though every essay type tests your writing skills, some essays also test your ability to read
carefully and critically. In a textual analysis essay, you don’t just present information on a
topic, but closely analyze a text to explain how it achieves certain effects.

Rhetorical analysis
A rhetorical analysis looks at a persuasive text (e.g. a speech, an essay, a political cartoon) in
terms of the rhetorical devices it uses, and evaluates their effectiveness.

The goal is not to state whether you agree with the author’s argument but to look at how they
have constructed it.

The introduction of a rhetorical analysis presents the text, some background information, and
your thesis statement; the body comprises the analysis itself; and the conclusion wraps up
your analysis of the text, emphasizing its relevance to broader concerns.

The example below is from a rhetorical analysis of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream”

King’s speech is infused with prophetic language throughout. Even before the famous “dream”
part of the speech, King’s language consistently strikes a prophetic tone. He refers to the
Lincoln Memorial as a “hallowed spot” and speaks of rising “from the dark and desolate valley
of segregation” to “make justice a reality for all of God’s children.” The assumption of this
prophetic voice constitutes the text’s strongest ethical appeal; after linking himself with
political figures like Lincoln and the Founding Fathers, King’s ethos adopts a distinctly
religious tone, recalling Biblical prophets and preachers of change from across history. This
adds significant force to his words; standing before an audience of hundreds of thousands, he
states not just what the future should be, but what it will be: “The whirlwinds of revolt will
continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.” This
warning is almost apocalyptic in tone, though it concludes with the positive image of the
“bright day of justice.” The power of King’s rhetoric thus stems not only from the pathos of his
vision of a brighter future, but from the ethos of the prophetic voice he adopts in expressing

Literary analysis
A literary analysis essay presents a close reading of a work of literature—e.g. a poem or novel
—to explore the choices made by the author and how they help to convey the text’s theme. It

book review. Instead, it is a type of argumentative essay where you need to analyze elements
such as the language, perspective, and structure of the text, and explain how the author uses
literary devices to create effects and convey ideas.

Before beginning a literary analysis essay, it’s essential to carefully read the text and come up
with a thesis statement to keep your essay focused. As you write, follow the standard
structure of an academic essay:

Step 1: Reading the text and identifying literary devices


The first step is to carefully read the text(s) and take initial notes. As you read, pay attention
to the things that are most intriguing, surprising, or even confusing in the writing—these are
things you can dig into in your analysis.

Your goal in literary analysis is not simply to explain the events described in the text, but to
analyze the writing itself and discuss how the text works on a deeper level. Primarily, you’re
looking out for literary devices—textual elements that writers use to convey meaning and
create effects. If you’re comparing and contrasting multiple texts, you can also look for
connections between different texts.

To get started with your analysis, there are several key areas that you can focus on. As you

Is it a first-person narrator (“I”) who is personally involved in the story, or a third-person

Consider the narrator’s perspective. Is the narrator omniscient (where they know everything
about all the characters and events), or do they only have partial knowledge? Are they an
unreliable narrator who we are not supposed to take at face value? Authors often hint that
their narrator might be giving us a distorted or dishonest version of events.

The tone of the text is also worth considering. Is the story intended to be comic, tragic, or
something else? Are usually serious topics treated as funny, or vice versa? Is the story
realistic or fantastical (or somewhere in between)?

Consider how the text is structured, and how the structure relates to the story being told.

Think about why the author chose to divide the different parts of the text in the way they did.

There are also less formal structural elements to take into account. Does the story unfold in
chronological order, or does it jump back and forth in time? Does it begin in medias res—in
the middle of the action? Does the plot advance towards a clearly defined climax?

With poetry, consider how the rhyme and meter shape your understanding of the text and
your impression of the tone. Try reading the poem aloud to get a sense of this.

In a play, you might consider how relationships between characters are built up through
different scenes, and how the setting relates to the action. Watch out for dramatic irony,
where the audience knows some detail that the characters don’t, creating a double meaning
in their words, thoughts, or actions.

Step 2: Coming up with a thesis


Your thesis in a literary analysis essay is the point you want to make about the text. It’s the
core argument that gives your essay direction and prevents it from just being a collection of
random observations about a text.

If you’re given a prompt for your essay, your thesis must answer or relate to the prompt. For

Your thesis statement should be an answer to this question—not a simple yes or no, but a
statement of why this is or isn’t the case:

Sometimes you’ll be given freedom to choose your own topic; in this case, you’ll have to come
up with an original thesis. Consider what stood out to you in the text; ask yourself questions
about the elements that interested you, and consider how you might answer them.

Your thesis should be something arguable—that is, something that you think is true about the
text, but which is not a simple matter of fact. It must be complex enough to develop through
evidence and arguments across the course of your essay.

Say you’re analyzing the novel Frankenstein. You could start by asking yourself:

How is the character of Frankenstein portrayed?

Your initial answer might be a surface-level description:

The character Frankenstein is portrayed negatively in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

However, this statement is too simple to be an interesting thesis. After reading the text and
analyzing its narrative voice and structure, you can develop the answer into a more nuanced
and arguable thesis statement:

Remember that you can revise your thesis statement throughout the writing process, so it
doesn’t need to be perfectly formulated at this stage. The aim is to keep you focused as you
analyze the text.

Finding textual evidence


To support your thesis statement, your essay will build an argument using textual evidence—
specific parts of the text that demonstrate your point. This evidence is quoted and analyzed
throughout your essay to explain your argument to the reader.

It can be useful to comb through the text in search of relevant quotations before you start
writing. You might not end up using everything you find, and you may have to return to the
text for more evidence as you write, but collecting textual evidence from the beginning will
help you to structure your arguments and assess whether they’re convincing.

Step 3: Writing a title and introduction


To start your literary analysis paper, you’ll need two things: a good title, and an introduction.

The title
Your title should clearly indicate what your analysis will focus on. It usually contains the name
of the author and text(s) you’re analyzing. Keep it as concise and engaging as possible.

A common approach to the title is to use a relevant quote from the text, followed by a colon
and then the rest of your title.

If you struggle to come up with a good title at first, don’t worry—this will be easier once
you’ve begun writing the essay and have a better sense of your arguments.

The introduction
The essay introduction provides a quick overview of where your argument is going. It should
include your thesis statement and a summary of the essay’s structure.

A typical structure for an introduction is to begin with a general statement about the text and
author, using this to lead into your thesis statement. You might refer to a commonly held idea
about the text and show how your thesis will contradict it, or zoom in on a particular device
you intend to focus on.

Then you can end with a brief indication of what’s coming up in the main body of the essay.
This is called signposting. It will be more elaborate in longer essays, but in a short five-
paragraph essay structure, it shouldn’t be more than one sentence.

Step 4: Writing the body of the essay


The body of your essay is everything between the introduction and conclusion. It contains
your arguments and the textual evidence that supports them.

Paragraph structure
A typical structure for a high school literary analysis essay consists of five paragraphs: the
three paragraphs of the body, plus the introduction and conclusion.

Each paragraph in the main body should focus on one topic. In the five-paragraph model, try
to divide your argument into three main areas of analysis, all linked to your thesis. Don’t try to
include everything you can think of to say about the text—only analysis that drives your
argument.

In longer essays, the same principle applies on a broader scale. For example, you might have
two or three sections in your main body, each with multiple paragraphs. Within these
sections, you still want to begin new paragraphs at logical moments—a turn in the argument
or the introduction of a new idea.

Topic sentences
To keep your points focused, it’s important to use a topic sentence at the beginning of each
paragraph.

A good topic sentence allows a reader to see at a glance what the paragraph is about. It can
introduce a new line of argument and connect or contrast it with the previous paragraph.
Transition words like “however” or “moreover” are useful for creating smooth transitions:

beyond the door, but upon the mundane process of aging undergone by the man as he
waits.

Using textual evidence


A key part of literary analysis is backing up your arguments with relevant evidence from the
text. This involves introducing quotes from the text and explaining their significance to your
point.

It’s important to contextualize quotes and explain why you’re using them; they should be
properly introduced and analyzed, not treated as self-explanatory:

There are many possible approaches to argumentative essays, but there are two common
models that can help you start outlining your arguments: The Toulmin model and the Rogerian
model.

Toulmin arguments
The Toulmin model consists of four steps, which may be repeated as many times as
necessary for the argument:

1. Make a claim
2. Provide the grounds (evidence) for the claim
3. Explain the warrant (how the grounds support the claim)
4. Discuss possible rebuttals to the claim, identifying the limits of the argument and
showing that you have considered alternative perspectives

The Toulmin model is a common approach in academic essays. You don’t have to use these
specific terms (grounds, warrants, rebuttals), but establishing a clear connection between
your claims and the evidence supporting them is crucial in an argumentative essay.

Say you’re making an argument about the effectiveness of workplace anti-discrimination


measures. You might:

1. Claim that unconscious bias training does not have the desired results, and resources
would be better spent on other approaches
2. Cite data to support your claim
3. Explain how the data indicates that the method is ineffective
4. Anticipate objections to your claim based on other data, indicating whether these
objections are valid, and if not, why not.

Rogerian arguments
The Rogerian model also consists of four steps you might repeat throughout your essay:

1. Discuss what the opposing position gets right and why people might hold this position
2. Highlight the problems with this position
3. Present your own position, showing how it addresses these problems
4. Suggest a possible compromise—what elements of your position would proponents of
the opposing position benefit from adopting?

This model builds up a clear picture of both sides of an argument and seeks a compromise. It
is particularly useful when people tend to disagree strongly on the issue discussed, allowing
you to approach opposing arguments in good faith.

Say you want to argue that the internet has had a positive impact on education. You might:

1. Acknowledge that students rely too much on websites like Wikipedia


2. Argue that teachers view Wikipedia as more unreliable than it really is
3. Suggest that Wikipedia’s system of citations can actually teach students about
referencing
4. Suggest critical engagement with Wikipedia as a possible assignment for teachers who
are skeptical of its usefulness.

You don’t necessarily have to pick one of these models—you may even use elements of both
in different parts of your essay—but it’s worth considering them if you struggle to structure
your arguments.

Regardless of which approach you take, your essay should always be structured using an
introduction, a body, and a conclusion.

Introducing your argument


Like other academic essays, an argumentative essay begins with an introduction. The
introduction serves to capture the reader’s interest, provide background information, present
your thesis statement, and (in longer essays) to summarize the structure of the body.

The body: Developing your argument


The body of an argumentative essay is where you develop your arguments in detail. Here
you’ll present evidence, analysis, and reasoning to convince the reader that your thesis
statement is true.

In the standard five-paragraph format for short essays, the body takes up three of your five
paragraphs. In longer essays, it will be more paragraphs, and might be divided into sections
with headings.

Each paragraph covers its own topic, introduced with a topic sentence. Each of these topics
must contribute to your overall argument; don’t include irrelevant information.

This example paragraph takes a Rogerian approach: It first acknowledges the merits of the
opposing position and then highlights problems with that position.

Body

A common frustration for teachers is students’ use of Wikipedia as a source in their writing.
Its prevalence among students is not exaggerated; a survey found that the vast majority of the
students surveyed used Wikipedia (Head & Eisenberg, 2010). An article in The Guardian
stresses a common objection to its use: “a reliance on Wikipedia can discourage students from
engaging with genuine academic writing” (Coomer, 2013). Teachers are clearly not mistaken in
viewing Wikipedia usage as ubiquitous among their students; but the claim that it discourages
engagement with academic sources requires further investigation. This point is treated as self-
evident by many teachers, but Wikipedia itself explicitly encourages students to look into
other sources. Its articles often provide references to academic publications and include

What is a text?

Textual analysis in literary studies


Textual analysis is the most important method in literary studies. Almost all work in this field
involves in-depth analysis of texts – in this context, usually novels, poems, stories or plays.

Because it deals with literary writing, this type of textual analysis places greater emphasis on
the deliberately constructed elements of a text: for example, rhyme and meter in a poem, or
narrative perspective in a novel. Researchers aim to understand and explain how these

Rhetoric, the art of effective speaking and writing, is a subject that trains you to look at texts,
arguments and speeches in terms of how they are designed to persuade the audience. This

Appeals are how the author convinces their audience. Three central appeals are discussed in

Logos, or the logical appeal, refers to the use of reasoned argument to persuade. This is the

their subject. For example, someone making a moral argument might highlight their own

in a passionate way, employing vivid imagery, or trying to provoke anger, sympathy, or any
other emotional response in the audience.

These three appeals are all treated as integral parts of rhetoric, and a given author may
combine all three of them to convince their audience.

Text and context


In rhetoric, a text is not necessarily a piece of writing (though it may be this). A text is
whatever piece of communication you are analyzing. This could be, for example, a speech, an
advertisement, or a satirical image.

In these cases, your analysis would focus on more than just language—you might look at
visual or sonic elements of the text too.

The context is everything surrounding the text: Who is the author (or speaker, designer,
etc.)? Who is their (intended or actual) audience? When and where was the text produced,
and for what purpose?

Looking at the context can help to inform your rhetorical analysis. For example, Martin Luther
King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech has universal power, but the context of the civil rights
movement is an important part of understanding why.

Claims, supports, and warrants


A piece of rhetoric is always making some sort of argument, whether it’s a very clearly
defined and logical one (e.g. in a philosophy essay) or one that the reader has to infer (e.g. in
a satirical article). These arguments are built up with claims, supports, and warrants.

A claim is the fact or idea the author wants to convince the reader of. An argument might

a single claim, or be built up out of many. Claims are usually explicitly stated, but

The author uses supports to back up each claim they make. These might range from hard
evidence to emotional appeals—anything that is used to convince the reader to accept a
claim.

The warrant is the logic or assumption that connects a support with a claim. Outside of quite
formal argumentation, the warrant is often unstated—the author assumes their audience will
understand the connection without it. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still explore the implicit
warrant in these cases.

For example, look at the following statement:

We can see a claim and a support here, but the warrant is implicit. Here, the warrant is the
assumption that more likeable candidates would have inspired greater turnout. We might be
more or less convinced by the argument depending on whether we think this is a fair

Analyzing the text

Rhetorical analysis isn’t a matter of choosing concepts in advance and applying them to a
text. Instead, it starts with looking at the text in detail and asking the appropriate questions
about how it works:

What is the author’s purpose?


Do they focus closely on their key claims, or do they discuss various topics?
What tone do they take—angry or sympathetic? Personal or authoritative? Formal or
informal?
Who seems to be the intended audience? Is this audience likely to be successfully
reached and convinced?
What kinds of evidence are presented?

By asking these questions, you’ll discover the various rhetorical devices the text uses. Don’t
feel that you have to cram in every rhetorical term you know—focus on those that are most
important to the text.

Take the following description of a park.

Literal description

There are patches of woodland in the park.

This tells us something about the place, but it’s a bit too literal and not likely to be memorable.

If we want to make the description more likely to stick in the reader’s mind, we can use some
figurative language.

Figurative description

Small groves are dotted across the face of the park like a patchy beard.

Here we have used a simile to compare the park to a face and the trees to facial hair. This is
memorable because it’s not what the reader expects; it makes them look at the park from a
different angle.

You don’t have to fill every sentence with figurative language, but using these devices in an
original way at various points throughout your essay will keep the reader engaged and convey
your unique perspective on your subject.

Use your senses


Another key aspect of descriptive writing is the use of sensory details. This means referring
not only to what something looks like, but also to smell, sound, touch, and taste.

Even when your subject is more abstract, you might find a way to incorporate the senses
more metaphorically, as in this descriptive essay about fear.

Fear is the smell of sweat, and the feeling you can’t breathe.

Choose the right words


Writing descriptively involves choosing your words carefully. The use of effective adjectives is
important, but so is your choice of adverbs, verbs, and even nouns.

It’s easy to end up using clichéd phrases—“cold as ice,” “free as a bird”—but try to reflect
further and make more precise, original word choices. Clichés provide conventional ways of
describing things, but they don’t tell the reader anything about your unique perspective on
what you’re describing.

Try looking over your sentences to find places where a different word would convey your
impression more precisely or vividly. Using a thesaurus can help you find alternative word
choices.
