AMC 8 Workshop Week 3
A few basic facts and theorems that will be helpful for some of these questions:
• The Pythagorean Theorem states that in a right triangle with legs (short sides) 𝑎 and 𝑏,
and hypotenuse 𝑐, these lengths will satisfy 𝑎! + 𝑏 ! = 𝑐 ! .
• Two common sets of side lengths that satisfy Pythagorean Theorem, or “Pythagorean
triples”, are 3, 4, 5 and 5, 12, 13:
13
5 5
3
4 12
(In each case, they do satisfy the theorem: 3! + 4! = 9 + 16 = 25, which equals 5! .
And 5! + 12! = 25 + 144 = 169, which equals 13! .)
If you memorize these triples, then you can sometimes fill in missing side lengths a little
more quickly than if you used the Pythagorean Theorem directly. Also, any multiple of
one of these sets of lengths will also be a Pythagorean triple. For instance, if we’re
given the triangle:
35 21
𝑥
We could solve for 𝑥 using the theorem, via the equation 𝑥 ! + 21! = 35! . Solving this
would give 𝑥 ! + 441 = 1225 → 𝑥 ! = 784 → 𝑥 = √784 = 28. Or, we could
recognize that both the given side lengths are 7 times side lengths in the 3-4-5 triangle
(35 = 5 × 7, and 21 = 3 × 7), so therefore the third side must be 7 times 4, i.e. 28.
• Area formulas:
o Square: 𝐴 = 𝑠 !
o Circle: 𝐴 = 𝜋𝑟 !
"
o Triangle: 𝐴 = ! 𝑏ℎ
o Rectangle or parallelogram: 𝐴 = 𝑏ℎ
#! $#"
o Trapezoid: 𝐴 = 9 !
:ℎ
"
o Rhombus: 𝐴 = ! 𝑑" 𝑑! where 𝑑" and 𝑑! are the diagonals

• In a circle, the distance from the center to the edge of the circle is a fixed length (the
radius). In circle questions, it is often useful to draw a radius in the picture.
• A “tangent” to a circle is a line that “grazes” the edge of the circle, only touching it at a
single point. Where a radius of a circle meets a tangent line, they will form a right angle.
• Similar figures are those that are the same ‘shape’, but different sizes.
o If two triangles have all the same angles, then they will be similar.
o In similar figures, all the matching sides will be in a fixed ratio, so to solve such
problems you’ll often use proportions.
o If two figures are similar, and the ratio of their side length is 𝑎: 𝑏, then the ratio
of their areas is the square of that ratio, 𝑎! : 𝑏 ! . (For instance, if two
%
quadrilaterals are similar, and the side lengths of the larger one are all & times
the corresponding side lengths in the smaller one, then the larger quadrilateral’s
% ! "'
area is 9&: , i.e. (
, time the area of the smaller one.)
• In two triangles with the same height, the ratio of their heights is equal to the ratio of
their areas.
