Reentrant Cavity
• A microwave reentrant cavity is a device able to provide a very
sensitive high-Q microwave mode.
• Its design can be highly advantageous for electromechanical devices
and quantum measurements.
• The reenrant cavities are designed for use in Klystron and
Microwave Triodes.
• A reentrant cavities one in which the metallic boundaries extend
into the interior of the cavity

Reentrant Cavity
• There are two modes for re-entrant cavity resonators:
✔ Transverse electromagnetic (TEM) type
✔ Transverse magnetic (TM) type
• The advantage of reentrant cavity resonator is..
✔ Increased band width of microwave length of frequency.
✔ Inductance decreased
✔ Reduced resistance losses
✔ Prevents radiation losses.
• It is used as wide band amplifier and oscillator from 3 MHz to 300 MHz.
• Reentrant cavity in cylindrical symmetry has been widely used in vacuum
tubes such as klystrodes and klystrons.

Klystron Tubes:
Klystron tube is a vacuum tube that can be operated either as an oscillator
or as an amplifier at microwave frequencies. Two basic configurations of
klystron tubes are :

1. Multicavity klystron which is used as a low power microwave amplifier.

2. Reflex klystron which is used as a low power microwave oscillator.

Velocity Modulation:

• Electric field from microwaves at buncher alternately speeds and

slows electron in the beam.
• This causes electrons to bunch up and causes density modulation.
• Electron bunches at catcher induce microwaves with more energy.
• Velocity modulation causes density modulation.
