Subject : OCTAGONAL FOOTING FOR 1
EQPUIPMENT FOUNDATION 0 0 12/30/1899 0 12/30/1899
2) Purpose :
This document presents calculations for the analysis and design of isolated octagonal footing for vertical vessel
3) Assumptions:
i) Vertical loads of the equipment are considered as per Mechanical Data Sheet
ii) Wind load and Seismic load given by the vessel vendor are acting at the underside of the vessel
iii) The vertical loads of empty condition are incresed by 10% to account for connected pipes, nozzles etc
for operating and test condition
iv) Live load on equipment is not considered for analysis
4) Design Principle :
The forces and moments at the base of the footing and at the base of the pedestal are calculated from the
equipment load and wind, earthquake loads.
The footing is checked for stability against Sliding and Overturning due to the external forces and moments.
Bearing capacity of soil is also checked and redistribution pressure is calculated in case of loss of contact.
Strength design is carried out for the reinforcement in pedestal. This reinforcement is also checked for tension
due to external moment acting on the pedestal.
Strength design is carried out to find the reinforcement in footing. The footing is also checked for one-way.
5) Applicable codes :
i) IS 456 : 2000 -Plain and Reinfroced Concrete Code of Practice
ii) Handbook of Concrete - Mark Fintel
iii) SP-16- Design aids for Reinforced Concrete to IS 456 : 1978
iv) STD-6501-C012 : Holding down Bolt standard
7) Output of Calculation
i) Check for Bearing Pressure
ii) Check for stability against Sliding and Overturning
iii) Size of pedestal, reinforcement details
iv) Size of footing, reinforcement details
8) Limitations :
i) Settlement of foundations are not calculated.
ii) The formulation for this calculation is only aaplicable for Fe 415 grade of reinforcing steel

1.2 Assumptions
1 Vertical loads of the equipment are considered as per MDS. The vertical loads are increased by 10% to
account for connection of valves, pipes etc for operating and test condition
2 LL is not considered for the preliminary analysis
3 MCE seismic values have been considered in design
4 Field value has been considered for equipment hydrotest condition
