CURUG CAWENI
A Water Fall in Sukabumi
Caweni Waterfall is one of the waterfall tourist attractions in the Sukabumi Regency
area. Curug in Sundanese means this waterfall has a natural panorama that will amaze anyone
who visits it.
According to the story that developed in the local community, a long time ago there
was a princess who lived in a village, the princess was named Caweni. She is a very beautiful
woman, anyone who sees her will definitely feel amazed and fall in love.
Unfortunately, in the princess's body, because of the beauty of her body, there is a
magical snake embedded because of a curse. The magical snake can at any time kill and devour
any man who proposes to the princess. In fact, according to legend, the princess was married
99 times during her lifetime, all ending in failure.
Every husband who wanted to ask for her hand on the first night was always pegged
by a snake before he managed to touch the princess. This is what makes Princess Caweni still
a virgin even though she has been married almost a hundred times.
Because she felt very confused, Princess Caweni finally decided to leave the village.
Moreover, local residents often talk about the oddities that exist in him. He left with his pets,
namely a duck (meri) and a dog as well as a mattress for his bed.
Sang walked along the river. On the way, he felt tired and intended to rest in a shady
place on the mattress he brought. Once it was enough, the princess continued her journey.
However, he deliberately left the rolled mattress he was sleeping on. From this incident, the
place was finally given the name Leuwi Kasur.
According to local people's stories, Leuwi Kasur has quite dangerous depths. Once
there was a man who was fishing in that place, when he caught a very big fish, the man
couldn't lift his fishing rod and instead fell and drowned.
Caweni Waterfall has its own charm. Not only because of its exotic natural panorama,
but it also holds myths that are enough to make the hair on the back of your neck crawl. This
myth is related to the presence of rocks on the cliff walls of the waterfall. This is because the
rock, which rises about 20 meters high, resembles two human statues.
The first stone has a shape like a human body standing with a slightly bowed posture.
Meanwhile, the second stone looks more like a face with a sad expression. The two stones are
seen facing each other. Secretary of the Sukabumi Regency Communication, Informatics and
Cryptography Service, Herdy Somantri, said that it is said that the two stones at the waterfall
tourist attraction are the incarnation of a beautiful-faced princess who was nicknamed
Caweni. In Sundanese, Caweni means bastard widow.
"According to local people's stories, this princess has a quite sad life story. She was
married 99 times. But she always ended up widowed after only a short time," he said. Because,
continued the man who is affectionately known as Bima, every time he marries, the husband
who married Putri Caweni always meets death before the first night arrives. Princess Caweni
had to experience this sad story until she married her 98th husband.
"It is called Caweni because she is a widow but is still pure because she has not been
touched by a man," explained Bima. One day, Princess Caweni remarried. This time the man
of her dreams was a beautiful prince named Prabu Boros Kaso. Because she was afraid that a
similar incident would happen again, as had happened to her previous husbands, the princess
finally decided to avoid Prabu Borosi Kaso just before her first night.
The beautiful woman went to the location of the waterfall and continued to cry until
she finally turned into a statue. "It's just a myth, in fact Caweni Waterfall is a tourist attraction
with quite beautiful open natural spots," he concluded.
