[When receiving this topic, the first person coming up to my mind] is a
teacher in my University, he is Professor N.

[If my mind serves me right], I first met him in my second year when
he taught me a subject related to Politics. [To talk about Mr. N], he is now in
his late 70s but somehow he still maintains his youth quite well. Actually, Mr.
N has just retired recently, but he is still working enthusiastically as a
consultant for the government.

[From his appearance, I can describe him as] a short guy with a slim
figure. [However, you’ll be impressed by] his agile style and infectious laughter.
If I don’t see the wrinkles, you know… signs of time, on his face, I really don’t
think he’s almost 80. [But what I like most about] Professor N is the eccentric
sense of humor, well… he often tells us some funny folklores or… maybe myths,
not only lift our mood up but also teach us some life lessons.

[There are many reasons why] I think Mr. N is such a smart man.
[Firstly], he is a sage in my eyes. As a leading researcher in Politics, he has
built up a reputation for his in-depth knowledge, plus practical experience. I’m
saying that he is a wise man who earns a lot of respect from the others.
[Besides], I really enjoy Professor’s great logical ability and creativity. In the
class, his lectures are always well-organized and easy to understand. Not to
mention his unexpected ideas, they are so innovative, I mean… they are totally
different form the heavy going textbooks at school.

[All in all], Mr. N is an amazing role model to me. I hope I can soon follow
his footsteps in the future.

2. APPEARANCE

Part 1-style questions

Examiner: Do you look like any other people in your family?

Carlo: No … not at all … take my brother for example … he has short cropped
hair and has quite a pointed face … he’s also quite fair-skinned compared to me

Examiner: Tell me about your family.

Andrea: My father’s getting on a bit … he’s in his 60s … but he looks very young
for his age … he still does lots of exercise and is quite well-built …

Examiner: What does your best friend look like?

Mandy: She’s the same age as me … she has shoulder-length hair … fair hair … she
has a slim figure and is medium height …

Part 2-style task

Describe a person whose appearance you like.

Monique: OK … I’d like to talk about my aunt … her name’s Marta and she’s quite a
character … she’s middle-aged but has a very youthful appearance … she’s a
little overweight I suppose but not too much … she has a friendly round
face framed by thick blonde hair … she has a lovely complexion and she’s
always well-turned out … she actually always looks like she’s going out for the
evening to somewhere special … there’s never a hair out of place … I’ve always

28
s
IELTS SPEAKING
Tr a i n e r V i e t A n h

thought she bears a striking resemblance to someone on TV … I can’t remember

the name now … she wears glasses and always seems to have a different pair on
every time I see her … I like the way she looks because she wears clothes that are
right for her age and manages to look glamorous without it looking like she’s too
done up … yes … I’ll be happy if I look like her when I’m her age …

Part 3-style questions

Examiner: Is it important to dress well whenever we go out?

Mark: It depends where you’re going … I know some people get done up just to go
to the shops … but I don’t see the point … you shouldn’t go out
looking scruffy with disheveled hair but I really don’t see the point in getting
dressed up to the nines unless you’re going somewhere special …

Examiner: Do people worry too much about their appearance as they get older?
Mira: I’m sure they do … yes … but it happens to all of us doesn’t it … we all go
grey eventually and get hard of hearing … we start to lose our figure … that’s why
plastic surgery is so popular … personally I think we just need to grow old
gracefully and not worry too much about how we look …

Examiner: Is attractiveness a quality worthwhile aiming for?

Phoebe: I’d like to say no … it shouldn’t matter what we look like in terms of our
physical appearance … but unfortunately it seems women especially are taken more
seriously if they are good looking with a slender figure with perfect make up and
so on …

Hmm… this is not an easy topic to choose as there many wonderful
countries that I’d love to discover. But I think Greece still [ranks first on my
list].

[If my mind serves me right], about two years ago, when I was surfing
the Internet, and suddenly… an advertisement pop up in front of my eyes.
Needless to say, I was blown away by the enchanting beauty of Greece. That’s
when I made a promise that I would come there one day. .

[Now, let me start by giving you some basic information about]

Greece. [To talk about] its location, Greece lies in the Southeast Europe,
scattered into many tiny small islands. Actually, it’s not a big country with the
population of around 10 million I guess. [One more thing], the weather… you
know, Greece is iconic for its Mediterranean ambience, extremely refreshing
with cool breeze and the salty smell of seawater.

[There are some reasons why] I’m desperate to fly to Greece someday.
[First of all], since Greece is called ‘cradle of human civilization’, I surely want
to dig deep into the history of this country and broaden my horizon to some
levels. It would be such a blessing to see the museums, monuments or maybe
temples, places that portray 5000 years of history. [Additionally], I have been
waiting for the moment I can experience the turquoise waters and
breathtaking sandy beaches. I won’t lie, I’m very eager to see how it’s
different from Asian beaches. [Last but not least], the rustic rural villages.
There will be nothing better than interacting with amiable inhabitants and
understanding their custom.

[All in all], the dream of exploring Greece will never be faded in me and
hopefully, it will come true very soon.

VOCABULARY FOR DESCRIBING PLACES

Outdoor places

Venice is the most beautiful city in the world, and the only one that can truly be
described as unique. Each building is a work of art, with their beauty enhanced
when reflected on the canals that cross the city. Its magical scenery is fascinating
and breathtaking at first sight, evoking the feeling of entering the setting of a real-
life fairy tale.
Prague is known as the city of the thousand spires because of its profusion of
grand, beautifully-preserved historical monuments dating from practically every
period in history. Those spires are best admired from the bridges that cross the
Vltava River, especially from the magnificent Charles Bridge, or standing in the
stunningly beautiful Old Town Square.

Magnificently sited on a series of hills running down to the grand Tagus River,
Lisbon is one of the world's most scenic cities. Beautiful unexpected views are
found at every turn down its colorful, picturesque streets, and especially from
strategically-placed viewpoints or terraces at the top of each hill. The city has an
unpolished, seductive appearance;

Each of the thousands of buildings that line Amsterdam’s main canals can be
classified as a monument, beautifully kept as apartments, offices, cafés and
restaurants. They form an aesthetic uniformity that make the city one of the most
captivating in the world, an amazing place of bridges and bikes crossing canals,
picturesque cobbled streets, and strikingly elegant architecture.

There are those who say God created the world in six days and devoted a
seventh to Rio. The city is indeed blessed with one of the most stunning settings
in the world, making it the most naturally attractive city in the world. Green,
tropical luxuriance mixes with the blue of the ocean and the brightness of the
sand at the beaches, proving that this is indeed "the marvelous city" as locals call
it.

Florence is synonymous with the Italian Renaissance, known for the artistic
heritage in its palaces and museum collections. See it from Piazzale
Michelangelo, a 19th century terrace overlooking the entire city, and you'll be
looking at one of the most storybook-perfect cityscapes. You'll see its unspoiled
skyline, the towers and domes of the heart of the city, its bridges, the hills in the
distance, and the magnificent Duomo standing in the middle of it all.

Split in two by the Danube River, Budapest is the result of the merging of three
cities. Buda is the hill with the royal palace and an old town filled with baroque
and gothic monuments looking over the mostly-19th century Pest, crossed by
broad avenues lined with graceful neo-renaissance buildings. Admire its setting
and remarkable architecture (including the spectacular Parliament Building) from
the monumental Chain Bridge, and step into the old town for some of the most
romantic lanes you'll ever stroll through.

[Before I start to say anything, I have to admit that] I don’t know much about
home appliance because I’m not a homebody. But I’ll try my best and the item I
choose for today is our family’s coffee machine.

[If my mind serves me right], 8 years ago, my aunt from Sweden sent my
family this machine as a housewarming gift. Honestly, at that time, I wasn’t very
fond of it because you know… I didn’t think I would become a fan coffee like I’m
now.

[Now, let me help me visualize this coffeemaker in more details]. This machine
is from a reputable brand in Sweden that I can’t pronounce its name [but I can tell
you] it has superior quality. [From the outside], it resembles the shape of an
hourglass, coffee grounds are placed in a… how to say… metal filter inside a funnel,
which is set over a glass or ceramic coffee pot. [And in terms of the color], black
and silver, quite elegant actually. [To talk about the function], I don’t think there’s
anything complicated to explain here: just to brew coffee in the morning.

[There are two main reasons why I think] coffee machine is the most useful
object in my house. [First of all], my parents and I are coffee addicts, that’s why we
really hate the watery taste of instant coffee. I mean only the coffee machine can
give us the strong earthy tones of Indonesian or gourmet coffee of Kenya. [But on
top of that], using this machine is a way for me to enjoy life. You know… every
morning when I come to the kitchen, I love immersing myself in mild aroma and the
sound of coffee maker thrumming steadily. As for me, taking a sip of freshly-made
coffee is a perfect stimulant to kick start a new day.

[All in all], despite the old rusty look of my coffee machine, I still love it so
much and I absolutely have no intention to toss it away even when it has run down.

[Well, as for today, I think I will tell you about] one time I went
travelling.

Actually, [this topic reminds me about] the trip 2 years ago during the
summer, I and my co-workers visited Nha Trang, one of the most gorgeous
coastal city in Vietnam.

[To talk about why] we decided to have this trip, it was quite of a
random decision. [When I recall], that summer was scorching hot, so we were
all emotionally drained. That’s why we decided to book the tickets, pack the
luggage and just traveled.

[The moment when] we set foot in Nha Trang, we headed off right to
the beach to enjoy the crystal-clear beach water and radiant sunshine.
Literally, we could sense the tropical wind breezing on the skin. [After that],
savoring the food was our second thing on the list; we had an amazing
gastronomic experience. There was not a single moment that we stopped
eating as the seafood was beyond any expectation. [On the next day], it
was time for bay trip I supposed… Honestly, the natural artworks here left
us feel speechless, too stunning in my opinion. [And finally, to finish the trip],
we went camping and watched the sunset together. There was wine and candles,
some snacks… and four people’s laughter being echoed by the sunset. Well, it
was the last beautiful scenario of the trip I could remember.

Frankly speaking, I can say that I traveled with all my heart and had no
regrets after the trip. We took a bunch of photos and all of those embrace
different moments of our youth. [In the end], I and my colleagues were so
delighted as you cannot see any sign of stress or frustration on our face
anymore.

Hopefully we can have more trips like this in the future.
