Review Answer the following questions:

1. What are mirrors?
2. Differentiate the two types of mirrors
3. What does the law of reflection state?
4. What are the characteristics formed by plane mirrors?

c. Activity Students will do this activity:

1. Get a spoon and hold at arm’s length away from you, with its
concave surface facing you.
2. Slowly bring the spoon towards you. Keenly observe your image at
different distances as you move the spoon. Write your observation.
3. Now, hold the spoon away with its convex surface facing you.
Slowly bring it toward you. Observe and describe the image formed
at different positions..
d. Analysis With regards to the activity above:
1. How will you compare the images formed by concave surface with
those formed by the convex surface at different positions

CURVED OR SPHERICAL MIRRORS

e. Abstraction What are curved mirrors?
Discussion - is a mirror with a curved reflecting surface. The surface may be either
convex (bulging outward) or concave (recessed inward).

Common uses of curved mirrors:

-
security mirrors in stores
-side view mirrors in vehicles
-mirrors in front of some vehicles

TWO TYPES OF CURVED/SPHERICAL MIRROR

Convex Mirror- the reflecting curved is outward

Concave Mirror- the reflecting curved is inward
IMAGES FORMED BY CURVED MIRRORS

To understandand the image formed by curved mirrors, you need to be

familiarized with these terms.

Center of curvature- center of the sphere C.

Radius of curvature- Radius of the sphere R.
Vertex- Center of middle portion of the curved mirror V.
Principal axis- the line passing through the vertex and the center of the
curvature.
Principal focus- the point on the principal axis where the incident rays
parallel to the principal axis meet after they are reflected.
Focal length- the distance between F and V of a mirror.

Ray Diagramming Method for Image Formation by Curved Mirrors

(Turn your book to page 233)

1. Ray 1 is an
incident ray parallel to the principal axis and is reflected through the
principal focus F. This ray is shown as AD.
2. Ray 2 passes through the center of the curvature C and is reflected
along its path. This ray travels along a secondary axis AE.
3. Ray 3 passes through the principal focus F and is reflected parallel to
the principal axis. This ray is shown as AG.
All three reflected rays intersect at A’, indicating the location of the formed
image.

Image Formed in Concave Mirror

The images formed in concave mirror depends on the location of the object
in fron ot the mirror.

1. Object located at an infinite distance

Orientation: Inverted
Type: real
Size: smaller than the
object
Location: at F

2. Object located beyond

the center of the curvature C

Orientation: Inverted
Type: real
Size: smaller than the
object
Location: between C and
F

Image Formed in Convex Mirror

An image formed in a convex mirror is constructed using a ray diagram.

Ray 1 is a ray coming from the object parallel to the principal axis which is
reflected from the surface of the mirror and diverges. So it appears to pass
through the principal focus F.
Ray 2 is a ray coming from the object which is reflected along the same path
seems to pass through the center of curvature C.
The point of intersection of the two rays is the image location.

Characteristic of the image formed by convex mirror is always smaller than

the object, upright, virtual and located behinf the mirror (between V
vertex and F principal focus)
To summarize the topic, students will answer the following questions:
1. What are the two types of curved mirrors? Describe each.
2. What are some of the common practical uses of curved mirrors?
3. If an object is located at an infinite distance from a concave mirror
what is would be it characteristics? Describe its orientation, type, size
and location.
4. What is the characteristic of the image formed in convex mirror?

Test I. TRUE OR FALSE

IV. EVALUATION Direction: Write the word TRUE if the statement is correct and write FALSE if the
statement is incorrect.
1. The image formed in a curved mirror is always a real image.
2. If an object is located at the center of the curvature in a concave mirror, the
image is always upright.
3. The angle of incidence must be greater than the angle of reflection.
4. An image formed by a convex mirror is always virtual and smaller than the
object.
5. Concave mirrors formed real images.
