I. PRELIMINARIES (4 minutes)
 Prayer
 Greetings
 Checking the cleanliness of the room
 Checking of attendance

II. REVIEW/DRILL/MOTIVATION (5 minutes)

 Motivation: Play a movie clip from a movie “The Devils Wears Prada” and ask the
students the following questions:

 Who started the interview? Did it start appropriately?


 How did the applicant respond to the questions?
 Do you think the job interview was effective? Why or why not?

 Vocabulary Activity: Let the class find the synonyms of the highlighted words.
 The best approach is to take action swiftly and decisively. (strategy)
 He nervously shifted from foot to foot. (moved)
 The class was involved in a heated discussion about politics. (conversation)

 Looking back to the previous lesson: Ask the class what was the topic last
meeting all about.

 Presentation of Objectives: Share to the class the learning objectives for today.

III. LESSON PROPER (25 minutes)

Types of Communicative Strategy


1. Nomination Employed when you want to start a
topic.
2. Restriction Refers to any limitation you have as a
speaker.
3. Turn-Taking Pertains to the process by which people
decide who takes the conversation floor.
4. Topic Control When a topic is initiated, it should be
collectively developed by avoiding
unnecessary interruptions.
5. Topic Shifting Involves moving from one topic to
another
6. Repair Refers to how the speakers address the
problem in the conversation.
7. Termination Refers to how the speaker ends a
conversation.

 Students’ Task:
 The class will be grouped into seven (7) groups.

 After a short discussion from the teacher, two representatives from each
group will do a roleplay of the communicative strategy.

 Values Integration: Let the class share their insights on the following
questions:

 What do you think is the importance of these communicative strategies in


your day-to-day conversation?
 What are the values a person portrays when using these communicative
strategies properly during communication?

 Generalization: Let the class enumerate the 7 types of communicative


strategies discussed.

IV. APPLICATION (5 minutes)


Directions: Identify the type of communicative strategy in each statement.

1. “Do you have anything to say?” (Topic Control)


2. “Now, it’s your turn to ask questions.” (Turn-Taking)
3. “One of the essential lessons I gained from the discussion is the importance of
sports and wellness to a healthy lifestyle.” (Topic Control)
4. “Excuse me? I think we should speak one at a time, so we can clearly understand
what we want to say about the issue.” (Repair)
5. “Have you heard the news about the latest achievement of our government?”
(Topic Shifting)
6. “Hey, how are you? I missed you!” (Nomination)
7. “Best regards to your parent. See you around!” (Termination)
8. “Good to see you. Anyway, I came to visit you because I want to personally offer
apologies for what I did yesterday.” (Termination)
9. “Sorry, I can’t decide now. I am still focused on my writing assignment. Let’s talk
next time, okay?” (Restriction)
10. “Go on with your ideas. I’ll let you finish first before I say something.”
(Turn-taking)

V. EVALUATION (10 minutes)


Directions: Give your own examples of statements in the given situations. 2 points
will be given for the correct answers in each item.
