A rectangular container must have a volume of 1 m 2 . The base is a square with each side
𝑥- metres in length. The height of the container is ℎ metres. The container has no lid.
The material for the base costs R75 per square metre and the material for the sides cost R50
per square metre.
The volume of a rectangular box is given by the formula: 𝑉 = 𝑥 " ℎ.

Show that for a minimum cost, the dimensions of the base must be 1,1 m ´ 1,1 m . [6]

A petrol tank at a petrol depot has both the inlet and the outlet pipes which are used
to control the amount of petrol it contains. The depth of the tank is given by
