A local swimming pool

Apsana
When I was five, my parents took me to the beach – that’s where
I started swimming. I began coming to the pool two years ago,
because it’s only five minutes to walk there from where I live. I
take a sandwich to eat if I go straight after school, because I’m
always hungry then! And once a month, the staff plan swimming
races for us. I enjoy taking part, but I don’t do them every month.

Daniela
My dad taught me to swim in a river, but I really like the pool –
the people working there are so friendly. And my swimming
teacher said I’m good enough to swim in a race next month.
My mum takes me to classes at the pool every week. It’s on the
other side of town, so we usually buy a snack in a café before
we start the journey.

Ping
The pool’s important to me, because I couldn’t swim before I
had lessons there. And I’m really happy because my teachers
say I’ll soon be ready to enter competitions! The pool’s next to
my school so I go there twice a week. After I swim, I have a
delicious piece of cake at the pool café. Then my mum collects
me in the car – it takes a long time to drive home again.

Questions 30–34

Read the text and questions below.

For each question, circle the correct letter A, B or C.

Interview with Jane Matthews,

cookery teacher
by Sophie Smith, aged 9

Can you tell me about the courses you teach?

Yes, I teach cooking at the local college. When I began, 12 students attended. That
grew to 25, and now 30 people are on the course.

How did you learn to cook?

Well, there were cookery classes we could go to after school, with a nice teacher, but
I didn’t like cooking, so I didn’t attend. Then, while at college, a classmate made me
dinner at her home – delicious! She showed me how to make several dishes. My
parents are great cooks, so they were pleased!

Where was your first job?

I thought about training as a chef in a hotel, but went to a hospital, making patients’
meals instead. That’s where I learnt about working in a big kitchen, before moving to a
restaurant.

Which dish do you really like cooking?

At home, I like simple things like vegetable soup. I also use a lot of vegetables in curry
– I like preparing that best. And my daughter’s brilliant at making my special pasta
dish!

What would you like to do next?

TV cookery programmes are popular now. But I’d like to help young people to cook,
so I’ve decided to put recipes into a book for them. I know lots of them already look at
my website – that’s great!
