Solve for x and write your answer in interval notation: −3 < ≤ 1. (4)

Therefore x ∈ (−∞, 0) ∪ [1, ∞).

Finally we take the intersection of the two solutions (i.e. where the lines overlap):

This gives us x ∈ −∞, −1

Question 4 [5 marks]

(a) Write f (x) = −x2 − 4x − 3 in the form f (x) = a(x − p)2 + q by completing the square. (2)

Solution:

f (x) = −(x2 + 4x + 3) = −(x2 + 4x + 4 + 3 − 4) = −((x + 2)2 − 1) = −(x + 2)2 + 1.

(b) Now use transformations to show step-by-step (on separate graphs), how the graph of f (x)
is obtained from the graph of y = x2 . (3)

Question 6 [3 marks]

(a) Prove that f (x) = ln x + 1 is a one-to-one function. (1)

Solution: Let f (a) = f (b).

√ √
∴ ln a + 1 = ln b + 1
√ √
∴ eln a+1 = eln b+1
√ √
∴ a+1= b+1
M

√ √
∴ ( a + 1)2 = ( b + 1)2
∴ a+1=b+1
∴ a=b

Therefore f (x) is one-to-one.

(b) Find f −1 (x). (2)

Solution: Let x = ln y + 1.
p
∴ ex = y + 1
∴ e2x = y + 1
∴ e2x − 1 = y
∴ f −1 (x) = e2x − 1

Question 7 [7 marks]
Determine the following limits or show that they do not exist:
x2 + x − 2
(a) lim (2)
x→−2 x2 + 5x + 6

Solution:

x2 + x − 2 (x + 2)(x − 1)
lim 2
= lim
x→−2 x + 5x + 6 x→−2 (x + 3)(x + 2)
x−1

O

(
x2 + 1 if x < 2
(b) lim f (x) if f (x) = (2)
x→2 x3 − 4 if x ≥ 2
EM
We have lim+ f (x) = lim+ (x3 − 4) = 23 − 4 = 8 − 4 = 4.
x→2 x→2

Also, lim− f (x) = lim− (x2 + 1) = 22 + 1 = 4 + 1 = 5.

x→2 x→2

Therefore limx→2+ f (x) 6= limx→2− f (x) so limx→2 f (x) does not exist.

(c) lim x2 cos . (3)
x→0 x2

Solution:

−1 ≤ cos x12 ≤ 1
M

∴ −x2 ≤ x2 cos x12 ≤ x2

Now lim −x2 = 0 = lim x2 .

x→0 x→0

Therefore, by the Squeeze Theorem, we have lim x2 cos = 0.
x→0 x2
