MH1811 Mathematics 2 Tutorial 1

Topics: Functions of 2 or more variables: Domain, Level sets, Limits and Continuity.

1. Express each of the following equation in the form α(x − a)2 + β(y − b)2 = γ, where α, β and γ
are positive real numbers. If it is a circle, determine the center and radius of the circle. Sketch
each of them on an xy-plane.

(a) x2 − 4x + y 2 = 5
(b) 4x2 − 6x + y 2 + 8y + 12 = 0

2. Identify each of the following equations as plane or a circle in R3 . If it is a plane, write down
a normal vector n which is perpendicular (orthogonal) to it, and determine the x-, y-, and z-
intercepts of the plane, if exists. If it is a sphere, determine its center and radius.

(a) x2 + 4x + y 2 + z 2 − 6z = 12
(b) 6z − 3x − 2y + 12 = 0
(c) 9x − 2y = 18
(d) x2 − x + y 2 + 6y + z 2 − 5z = 0

3. Find and sketch the domain for each function. Express the domain in the following form:
Domain of f : (x, y) ∈ R2 |

.

(a) f (x, y) = ln x2 + y 2 − 9

(x − 1)(y + 2)
(b) f (x, y) =
(y − x)(y − x2 )
p
4. Consider the function f (x, y) = x2 − 3x − y.

(a) Determine the domain of f (x, y).

(b) Sketch the domain of f , and the level curve that passes through P = (−2, 6).
(c) Find the value c such that f (4, c) = 1.

5. For each of the following functions f (x, y) and specified values of k, sketch the level curves
f (x, y) = k.

(a) f (x, y) = x2 + y 2 , k = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4
(b) f (x, y) = 3x + y, k = −2, −1, 0, 1, 2
(c) f (x, y) = x + y 2 − 2y, k = −2, 0, 2

if y ≥ x2 + 1

 3,
6. Let f (x, y) = −1, if y ≤ 0
0, otherwise .

(i) Sketch on the (x, y)-plane the level curves for (a) f (x, y) = 3 , (b) f (x, y) = −1 and (c)
f (x, y) = 0.
(ii) Find each of the following limits, or explain that the limit does not exist.
(a) lim f (x, y)
(x,y)→(0,2)
(b) lim f (x, y)
(x,y)→(0,0)
(iii) Describe the functions g(x) = f (x, 7) for each x ∈ R, and h(y) = f (2, y) for each
y ∈ R.

7. Determine if the limit exists for each of the following.

(a) lim x2 y 2
(x,y)→(1,2)
ey sin x
(b) lim
(x,y)→(0,0) x
xy − y − 2x + 2
(c) lim , where x 6= 1.
(x,y)→(1,1) x−1
x+y−4
(d) lim √ , where x + y 6= 4.
(x,y)→(2,2) x+y−2
x−y
(e) lim
(x,y)→(0,0) x2 + y 2
xy
(f) lim
(x,y)→(0,0) x + y 2
2

8. Is f continuous at (0, 0) where

 x3 sin 1
, (x, y) 6= (0, 0);
f (x, y) = x2 + y 2 ?
 0, (x, y) = (0, 0).

x3 − 5x2 y
9. Use Squeeze Theorem to show that lim = 0.
(x,y)→(0,0) x2 + y 2

(Hint: Use triangle inequality and both equalities |x|2 ≤ x2 + y 2 and |y|2 ≤ x2 + y 2 .)
