1. For the given functions f (x, y), (a) find the function’s domain, (b) find the function’s range,
(c) find the function’s level curves, (d) find the boundary of the domain (e) Determine whether
the domain is an open region, a closed region, or neither, and (f) decide whether the domain is
bounded or unbounded:

y p
(a) f (x, y) = (b) f (x, y) = 9 − x2 − y 2 (c) f (x, y) = sin−1 (y − x)
x2

2. Find an equation for the level surface of the function f (x, y, z) = ln(x2 + y + z 2 ) passing through
(−1, 2, 1).

3. By considering different paths of approach, show that functions f (x, y) have no limit as (x, y) →
(0, 0):

2xy xy x
(a)f (x, y) = (b)f (x, y) = (c)f (x, y) = − p
x2 + y 2 |xy| x + y2
2

x2 y 2 tan−1 (xy) tan−1 (xy)

4. Does knowing that 1− < < 1, can you tell anything about lim ?
3 xy (x,y)→(0,0) xy

x2 y 2 √
5. Does knowing that 2|xy| − < 4 − 4 cos( 1xy) < 2|xy|, can you tell anything about
p 6
4 − 4 cos( |xy|)
lim ?
(x,y)→(0,0) |xy|

6. Find the limit if it exists or show that limit does not exist:

y2
(a) lim
(x,y)→(0,0) x2 + y 2

3x2 y
(b) lim
(x,y)→(0,0) x2 + y 2

2
(c) lim ey tan(xz)
(x,y,z)→(π,0,1/3)

7. Using ϵ − δ definition, prove that following functions f (x, y) are continuous at a point (0, 0):

x+y
(a)f (x, y) = x2 + y 2 (b)f (x, y) = (c)f (x, y) = tan2 x + tan2 y
x2 + 1

1
x2 − y 2
8. Where the function f (x, y) = is continuous?
x2 + y 2

9. Determine the set of points at which function is continuous:

 2
 x − y2
if (x, y) ̸= (0, 0)
(a)f (x, y) = x2 + y 2
0 if (x, y) = (0, 0)

 3x2 y

if (x, y) ̸= (0, 0)
(b)f (x, y) = x2 + y 2
0 if (x, y) = (0, 0)

11. Can be made continuous by suitable defining it at (0, 0)?
