CHEMICAL KINETICS
General Instructions:

Read the following instructions very carefully and strictly follow them:

(i) Question paper comprises four sections – A, B, C and D.


(ii) There are 37 questions in the question paper and all questions are compulsory.
(iii) Section A – Q. No. 1 to 20 are very short answer type questions carrying one mark each. Answer
these questions in one word or one sentence.
(iv) Section B – Q. No. 21 to 27 are short answer type questions carrying two marks each.
(v) Section C – Q. No. 28 to 34 are long answer type-I questions carrying three marks each.
(vi) Section D – Q. No. 35 to 37 are long answer type-II questions carrying five marks each.
(vii) There is NO overall choice in the question paper. However, an internal choice has been provided in
2 questions of two marks, 2 questions of three marks.
(viii) However, separate instructions are given with each section and question, wherever necessary.
(ix) Use of calculators and log tables is NOT permitted.

SECTION A

1. The unit of rate constant of a reaction is mol-1 L s-1. What is the order of the reaction?
2. What happens to the half-life period for a first order reaction, if the initial concentration
of the reactants is increased?

4. Define instantaneous rate of reaction.

reactant remaining at the end of 60 minutes.
22. What is half life? Show that the half-life period of a first order reaction is independent of
initial concentration of reacting species.
23. A reaction is first order with respect to the reactant A and second order with respect to
the reactant B in the reaction:

(i) Write the differential rate equation
(ii) How is the rate of the reaction affected on increasing the concentration of B by 2
times?
OR
Define collision frequency. Give an example for pseudo-first order reaction.

24. Given
2NO(g) + O2(g) → NO2(g) ; rate = k [NO]2 [O2]1
By how many times does the rate of the reaction change when the volume of the reaction
vessel is reduced to 1/3rd of its original volume? Will there be any change in the order of
the reaction?
25. A certain first order reaction is half completed in 46 mins. Calculate the rate constant and
also time taken for 75% completion of the reaction.
26. Show that in case of a first order reaction, the time taken for completion of 99.9%
reaction is ten times the time required for half change of the reaction.
OR
A first order reaction takes 10 minutes for 25% decomposition. Calculate t 1/2 for the
reaction. (Given: log 2 = 0.3010, log 3 = 0.4771, log 4 = 0.6021).

SECTION C

27. (a) Derive integrated rate equation for the first order reaction.
(b) According to collision theory, what are the two factors that lead to effective
collision?
OR
(a) Show that half-life period for a zero order reaction is directly proportional to initial
concentration.

(b) The half-life for radioactive decay of C is 5730 years. An archaeological artifact
containing wood had only 80% of the 14C found in a living tree. Estimate the age of the
sample.

28. Define the following terms.


(i) Rate constant
(ii) Temperature coefficient
(iii) Activation energy
29. (a) How does change in temperature affect the rate of reaction? How can this effect the
rate constant of the reaction represented quantitatively.
(b) How does a catalyst affect the reaction rate? Explain taking suitable examples.

30. The following data were obtained during the first order thermal decomposition
of SO2Cl2 at a constant volume. Calculate the rate constant.

(Given: log 4 = 0.6021, log 2 = 0.3010)


31. (a) The rate constant for a first order reaction is 60 s 1. How much time will
it take to reduce the initial concentration of the reactant to 1/10th of its initial value?
(b) With the help of diagram explain the role of activated complex in a reaction.

32. Rate constant is equal to the rate of reaction when molar cone, of reactants is unity. Its
unit depends upon order of reaction.
A reactant has a half-life of 10 minutes.
(i) Calculate the rate constant for the first order reaction.
(ii) What fraction of the reactant will be left after an hour of the reaction has occurred?

concentration of the reaction, what concentration of reactant will remain in solution after
3 hours?

35. (a) A reaction is second order in A and first order in B.
(i) Write the differential rate equation.
(ii) How is the rate affected on increasing the concentration of A three times?
(iii) How is the rate affected when the concentrations of both A and B are doubled?
(b) A first order reaction takes 40 minutes for 30% decomposition. Calculate t1/2 for
this reaction.

36. (a) Define collision frequency.


(b) Why does the rate of a reaction not remain constant throughout the reaction
process?
(c) For a chemical reaction R →P, the variation in the concentration, ln[R] vs. time (s)
plot given as
(i) Predict the order of the reaction.
(ii) What is the slope of the line?
(iii) Write the unit of rate constant for this reaction.

37. (a) Define pseudo first order reaction.


(b) For the hydrolysis of methyl acetate in aqueous solution, the following result were
obtained.

(i) Show that it follows pseudo first order reaction, as the concentration of water
remains constant.
(ii) Calculate the average rate of reaction between the time interval 30 to 60 seconds.
(Given: log 2 = 0.301, log 3 = 0.4771, log 4 = 0.6021)
