This module covers various aspects of functions. You are to look into the
different types of functions and its characteristics, domain and range of a function and
its graph.

We have studied the general characteristics of functions, so now let’s examine some specific
classes of functions. We begin by reviewing the basic properties of linear and quadratic functions,
and then generalize to include higher-degree polynomials. By combining root functions with
polynomials, we can define general algebraic functions.

FUNCTIONS AND ITS GRAPH

LINEAR FUNCTION

A linear function is any function that

can be written in the form
where and are
real numbers. The domain of a
linear function is the set of all real
numbers . The graph of this function
has slope m and y-intercept b .

The domain is the set of all possible x-values which will make the function "work". The
range of a function is the set of all possible resulting values of the dependent variable, after we
have substituted the domain.

One special case of the linear function is the constant function .

CONSTANT FUNCTION

, b is any real number

The graph of a constant
function is a horizontal line.
The corresponds to the
point .

The domain of a constant function is the set

of all real numbers . The range, however,
is a single value .
IDENTITY FUNCTION

The graph of the identity function has the

following properties: It passes through the
origin, and every point that lies on the line has
equal and .

The domain of a constant function is the set of

all real numbers . The range is also the set of
all real numbers .

ABSOLUTE VALUE FUNCTION

The graph of this function is

symmetric with respect to
the .

Domain: (∞, -∞)

Range: [0, -∞)

QUADRATIC FUNCTION

The graph of the square function is called a

parabola. It is symmetric about the .

The domain of the square function is the set of all

real numbers and the range of the square function
is the set of all nonnegative numbers.
CUBE FUNCTION

Cube function is symmetric about

the origin.

The domain of the cube function is

the set of all real numbers and the
range of the cube function is also
the set of all real numbers .

SQUARE ROOT FUNCTION

𝑓(𝑥 ) = √𝑥

The domain of the square root

function is and the range
is .
