Exercise 1 : Anwer these questions.

1. What does RAM stand for?


Answer : Random Access Memory
2. What is ROM measured in?
Answer : Active Range Of Motion (AROM) and Passive Range Of Motion (PROM)
3. Where are CPU, RAM and ROM chips located?
Answer : Motherboard
4. What is laser printer used for?
Answer : To print a document
5. How many bites for 1 kilobites?
Answer : 1000 bit

Exercise 2 : Choose the words/phrase below that suitable in the sentences

 Input : Your Keyboard and Mouse for example, are just input units: ways of getting
information into your computer that it can process. If you see a Microphone and Voice
Recognition software, that’s another form of input.
 Memory/storage : Your computer probably stores all you documents and files on a Hard
Drive : a huge magnetic Memory. But smaller, computer-based devices like digital cameras and
cellphones use other kinds of storage such as Flash Memory cards.
 Processing : Your computer’s processor (sometimes known as the Central Processing Unit) is a
microchip buried deep inside. It works amazingly hard and gets incredibly hot in the process.
That’s why your computer has a little Fan blowing away: to stop its brain from overheating!
 Output : Your computer probably has an LCD screen capable of displaying high-resolution
(very detailed) Graphics, and probably also stereo Loudspeakers. You may have an Inkjet on
your desk too to make a more permanent form of output.

Exercise 3 : Describing function.

When we answer the questions what does x do?, we describe the function of x. Example : What does a
keyboard do? It produces output in any language or alphabet and also produces graphics in full colour.
We can emphasize function by using this pattern.

Now explain function of each device

1) Monitor : a computer monitor is a display adapter that displays information processed by the
computer’s video card.
2) CPU : The CPU supports data by performing the functions of fetching, encoding, and executing
programmed instructions.
3) Webcam : is to make it easier to process instant messages such as chat via video or face to face
via video directly.
4) Graphic Card : is a function to translate/convert digital signals from the computer into a graphic
display on the monitor screen
5) Microphone : serves to channel the sound so that it can be enlarged with the speaker
