1. Joe Biden held ‘around-the-clock’ crisis meetings with stakeholders in the Middle East to stop
another war from breaking out in the region between Israel and Iran amid fears of an imminent
retaliation from Tehran over the killing of Hamas’s top political leader.
2. Israel sent troops to bolster its borders with the West Bank to prepare for a possible ground
assault orchestrated by Hamas and Iran.
3. Jordan has denied the US, Israeli and Iranian militaries permission to use its airspace amid
rising concerns over an imminent war in the Middle East.
Jordanian foreign minister Ayman Safadi told Tehran that Jordan will not permit Israel to use its
airspace, Sky News Arabia reported.
4. Aug 5 (Reuters) - Jordan's King Abdullah, in a phone call on Monday with U.S. President
Joe Biden, warned of what he called "hostile acts" by Israeli settlers against Palestinians and
"unilateral measures" that threaten the status quo of Jerusalem's holy sites.
5. Israel could launch a preemptive strike on Iran if it were certain that Tehran was preparing
to attack the Jewish nation, Times of Israel reported citing Hebrew media following prime
minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s meeting with security chiefs.

case against Israel over the war on Gaza at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) at The Hague.
10. An investigation by the UN’s Office of Internal Oversight Services found that nine UNRWA
employees ‘may have been involved’ in the October 7th attacks on Israel. The investigation
involved 19 staff members Israel had accused of being involved in the attack. It found no
evidence or insufficient evidence against the other 10.

12. ISLAMABAD (AP) — Afghanistan’s Taliban government said Monday it would allow people
in the country on visas issued by the former Western-backed government to stay for now,
but that they wouldn’t be allowed back in without documents from a Taliban-approved diplomatic
mission.

1. TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) — Tunisian President Kais Saied filed papers Monday to run in the
October presidential election, where he is expected to face little competition as potential
challengers have been imprisoned during his first term.
 Abir Moussi, a fierce critic of Tunisian President Kais Saied regarded as a potential
candidate in the upcoming presidential election, was given a two-year jail sentence on
Monday for criticising the country's High Independent Authority for Elections,
joining dozens of recently jailed Saied critics.
2. DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — The U.S. handed over its last military base in Niger — one of two
crucial hubs for American counterterrorism operations in the country — to local authorities, the
U.S. Department of Defense and Niger’s Ministry of Defense announced in a joint statement on
Monday.
3. Security forces in Somalia's southern city of Kismayo have seized hundreds of Islamic face
veils from female residents, the city's police chief says.
 Warsame Ahmed Gelle told state TV that authorities have been conducting operations to
"fight" the veils, also known as niqabs.
 The crackdown was sparked by concerns that jihadists could conceal their identity and carry
out attacks, Mr Warsame said.

4. KAMPALA, Aug 5 (Reuters) - Nearly 100 police officers from the Democratic Republic of
Congo fled to neighbouring Uganda over the weekend as fighting between M23 rebels and the
military in Congo's east intensified, a Ugandan military spokesperson said on Monday.
5. KAMPALA, Aug 5 (Reuters) - Police arrested 14 Ugandan opposition officials and supporters
on Monday as they marched through their capital towards the Kenyan embassy to protest
against Nairobi's decision to detain and deport a group of their colleagues, local media said.\
6. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed the signing of the joint communiqué of the

1. Bangladesh's army chief says an interim government will be formed and new elections called -
although there has not been much detail provided
 Student leaders have said that they will not accept a military-led government
 They say they want Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus as chief adviser of an interim
government
 Bangladesh's garments manufacturers' body has announced that all garment factories have
been requested to stay closed on Tuesday, in what could be a major disruption to one of the
country's key industries.
 Bangladesh's key police association has said its members are going on strike.
"Until the security of every member of the police is secured, we are declaring a strike," the
Bangladesh Police Service Association (BPSA) said in a statement.
 Bangladesh's parliament has been dissolved, according to a statement from the president's
office.
2. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet officially launched a controversial $1.7 billion (€1.5
billion) canal project on Monday. The China-funded waterway will cover 180 kilometers (110
miles), connecting the Mekong River to the sea.
About one third of cargo coming into Cambodia must first pass through Vietnamese ports. The aim of
the canal is to reduce that number and allow goods to flow directly into Cambodia.
