QUESTION 1 – MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS

Four options are provided as possible answers to the following questions. Each question has
only ONE correct answer. Write only the letter (A-D) next to the question number (1.1-1.4) on
the answer sheet. Each one counts TWO MARKS.

1.1 The intermolecular forces holding the molecules in ice together are …
A covalent bonds.
B hydrogen bonds.
C ion-dipole forces.
D van der Waals forces. (2)

1.2 In which ONE of the following is the tendency, to form ionic bonds between
the particles in the crystal lattice, the strongest?
A KBr(s)
B CO2(s)
C HF(s)
D SiO2(s) (2)

1.3 Which ONE of the following molecules contains polar bonds, but is classified
as a non-polar molecule?
A O=C=O
B Br – Br
C C≡ O
D H–O–H (2)

1.4 In which ONE of the following will NO hydrogen bonding occurs between molecules?

QUESTION 2: (Start on a new page)

A learner studies fluorine and carbon and the bonds that atoms of each can form with other
atoms.

Fluorine is a reactive element that can react with water and many metals. Carbon is a very special
element because it is one of the elements in the food we eat, the clothes we wear, and the fuel in
our cars.
2.1. Write down the number of valence electrons in an atom of:
2.1.1 Fluorine (1)
2.1.2 Carbon (1)
2.2 Define the term covalent bond. (2)
2.3 Write down the Lewis structure for:
2.3.1 F2 (2)
2.3.2 HCN (2)

2.4 Write down the name of the type of bond between particles in molecules of:
2.4.1 F2 (2)
2.4.2 HF (2)

2.5 On your periodic table, the electronegativity of oxygen is 3,5 and that of nitrogen is 3,0.
2.5.1 Define electronegativity (2)
2.5.2 Explain why oxygen is more electronegative than nitrogen. (2)

2.6 The table below shows bond lengths and bond energies for different bonds between two carbon
atoms.
Bond Length (pm) Energy (kJ·mol-1)
A C─C 154 348
B C=C 134 614
C C≡C 120 839
2.6.1 Define bond energy (2)
2.6.2 Write down the relationship between bond length and bond energy as shown in the above (2)
table.
2.6.3 Which one of the bonds (A, B, or C) will be the weakest? Explain. (2)

QUESTION 3: (Start on a new page)

3.1 State whether each of these molecules is polar or non-polar.

3.1.1 ammonia (NH3) (1)
3.1.2 carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) (1)

3.2 Which type of intermolecular forces is found between particles in:

3.2.1 NH3(ℓ ) (2)

3.2.2 NaCℓ (s) dissolved in H2O (2)
3.2.3 Liquid He (2)
3.2.4 HBr(g) (2)

3.3 Water evaporates slower than carbon tetrachloride (CCℓ 4). Explain this statement in (2)
terms of intermolecular forces.

3.4 The melting points of three alkanes are given in the table below.
Alkane Melting point (°C)
CH4 (methane) -146
C8H18 (octane) -57
C23H48 (wax) 49
3.4.1 Define melting point. (2)
3.4.2 Identify the dependent and independent variables. (2)
