Music Theory

 Notes and Scales: The foundation of music, notes are the basic
units, and scales are sequences of notes arranged by pitch. The
most common scales are major and minor.

 Chords: A combination of three or more notes played together.


Chords are the building blocks of harmony.

 Melody: A sequence of notes that is musically satisfying. It is


often the most memorable part of a song.

 Harmony: The combination of different musical notes played or


sung simultaneously to produce a pleasing sound.

 Rhythm: The timing of musical sounds and silences, the pattern of


beats in a piece of music. Common time signatures include 4/4,
3/4, and 6/8.

 Dynamics: Refers to the volume of music. Terms like forte (loud),


piano (soft), crescendo (gradually getting louder), and
decrescendo (gradually getting softer) are used to describe
dynamics.

 Tempo: The speed at which a piece of music is played. It is


measured in beats per minute (BPM).

 Timbre: Also known as "tone color," it refers to the quality of


sound that distinguishes different instruments or voices.

2. Genres of Music

 Classical: A broad genre that includes symphonies, operas, and


chamber music from composers like Mozart, Beethoven, and Bach.

 Jazz: Originating in the African-American communities, jazz is


characterized by swing and blue notes, call and response vocals,
polyrhythms, and improvisation.

 Rock: A genre that developed in the 1950s, characterized by a


strong beat, simple chord progressions, and often focuses on
electric guitar.

 Pop: Short for "popular music," pop is characterized by its catchy


melodies, simple chords, and repetitive structure. It often focuses
on love and relationships.
