A New YearA New Journey Many years ago I would visit my grandparents in Brown County. As I went from room to room I would cross a raised threshold. There were times that I would trip over the threshold as my foot hit it or other times I crossed into the next room with ease. Today most homes do not have a distinct threshold that separate rooms. Yet, you can think of the threshold as a point of entry, a new beginning, or a rite of passage. You can either pass through the doorway tripping or pass over the threshold into the next room with ease. Going from room to room may suggest life transitions. You may think of going from childhood to becoming an adult to retirement as entering new rooms or life transitions. Or you can think of going from one year to the next. As I look at the room we just left I can state with assurance we have accomplished much. Staff and volunteers have made a difference in the lives of so many senior citizens. Sowhat do we expect upon entering our new room2012? A new year is a new beginning. We can hope, predict, vision and dream. We can Take our past successes Embrace best practices Assess our programs & services, and Manage our financial resources 2012 will be a new beginning for me. It will be the first year without my mother which means Chuck and I are the oldest generation in our familythe patriarchs so to speak. This New Year I will be entering a new room on my journey of life. May you have a great journey during 2012!

More Seniors are Addicted to Prescription Drugs Drugs in the Danger Zone:
The abuse of prescription drugs has taken place quietly among a segment of the population where you would least expect it: the elderly. Drugs commonly abused by senior citizens belong to a group called the benzodiazepines. These drugs slow the activity of the brain and are used to treat anxiety and sleeplessness. They can easily veer off into the danger zone of abuse: Diazepam (Valium) Chlordiazepoxide hydrochloride (Librium) Alprazolam (Xanax) Triazolam (Halcion) Estazolam (ProSom) The National Institute on Drug Abuse recommends that senior citizens use those drugs for no longer than 4 months because of the risk of addiction. Signs of trouble for users include: Memory loss or forgetfulness, excessive sleepiness and frequent falls or stumbling. If you or a family member have any of these symptoms, experts recommend that you talk with your doctor. Source: www.USATODAY.com

The Boone County Jail has a medication disposal cabinet in the jail entry. The disposal is available seven days per week and is open for public use. The project was made possible thanks to the joint efforts of the Boone County Sheriffs Department, the Boone County Health Department and the Boone County Solid Waste Management District which also provided funding for the disposal

John Tousley lives in Zionsville and has been a Boone County resident since 1978. He and his wife Carolyn have four children; Adam (29), Ben (25), Doug (21) and Clair (19). Johns son Adam served with the 101st airborne division in Iraq in 2005-6 and is currently working on a Masters in Public Administration in Seattle. more than 100 years old. John is a the former president of the Village Residents Association. In his free time he enjoys playing with computers, reading, history and finding interesting places and things to explore. John recently fulfilled a nine-year term on the BCSSI Board of Directors. He joined the board in 2003 and participated in many functions. He serves as the Building and Facility chair and he will continue to chair the committee through 2012. As an attorney, John feels it is important to serve when and where his education and experience are needed. BCSSI was an opportunity to serve a part of our society to whom we owe a great deal and whose needs are sometimes overlooked or simply not met. I was convinced that BCSSI was doing a great job and the people I was serving were just as committed to the cause we all served. Thank you John for your service and support of BCSSI!
