READING
Read the article about a trip to Ayers Rock. Five sentences have been
removed. Choose from the sentences A–G the one which fits each gap (1–5).
There is one extra sentence which you do not need to use.

The wonders of Down Under – day six

After a bumpy overnight coach journey from Alice Springs down through the Red
Centre of Australia, here we are on day six of our backpacking tour at one of the
highlights of any tourist's visit to the country: Ayers Rock. 0 C This amazing
sandstone rock is two and a half times the height of Sydney Harbour Bridge at nearly
350 metres high. That's taller than the Eiffel Tower.
There are several ways to get close to this incredible place but, of course, we aren't
wealthy enough to afford a helicopter flight at $250 per person. 1 Sadly, that was
out of our budget range too so we abandoned that idea when we were planning.
In the end we decided on a trek on foot guided by a local expert. 2 It ticks the box
of having low environmental impact and is also respectful to the indigenous people.
We had no intention of giving in to the urge to climb the rock. This is highly offensive to
the Anangu people for whom it's a sacred and important cultural site. Fortunately, the
numbers of tourists wanting to make the ascent have fallen recently. 3 I think it's a
real shame that a few visitors don't respect polite requests by the Anangu to stop.
Anyway, I'm writing this blog back at our tent at the Ayers Rock Resort, looking out at
the stunning red rock of Uluru. The walking tour was fairly easy but lasted around four
hours. Thank goodness Sally put her walking boots on for once instead of flip-flops.
We spotted some vicious-looking ants on the trek and snakes are common too. 4
There are so many flies around here that it would be pretty unbearable without it.
During the trek, our aboriginal guide, Yarran, really impressed us with brilliant
storytelling and historical knowledge. When we approached the base of Uluru, I
definitely felt it was a special place. 5
Yarran came back to the campsite with us and on the way, he taught us how to find
things to eat in a survival situation. They call this kind of food 'bush tucker'. And one
thing I've learned is that it's quite common for kangaroo meat to be included in the list.
Anyone for a kangaroo burger?

A We're pretty sure that as well as being the least expensive way to explore the area, this
was probably the most ethical.
B Here's a top tip: insect repellent is essential.
C It's also known as Uluru which is the name used by the traditional owners, the Anangu
aboriginal people.
D Another, more environmentally-friendly, option which appealed to us was a sunrise camel
trek across the sand dunes.
E Even so, some persist in 'going up'.
F We spoke in hushed voices and I think we were all aware of a spiritual connection with
nature.
G There is really only one place to stay overnight in the Outback.
