The mean weight of a five-year old child in the United Kingdom is estimated to be 18 kg.
(a) If there are 810,000 five-year old children, calculate the estimated total weight of all
five-year old children in the United Kingdom. Give your answer in the form ,
where and . [2]
(b) In a study, scientists took a sample of 10,000 five-year old children and calculated the
mean weight of the sample. State a sampling technique which would reduce bias for
this study. [1]
(c) The scientists measured the mean weight of the sample to be 18.3 kg. Calculate the
percentage difference between the estimated weight and the weight measured by the
scientists. [2]
At the 5 % level of significance, a t-test was used to compare the mean heights of the two
populations. Each data set is assumed to be normally distributed, and the population
variances are assumed to be the same.
(b) Hence, find the distance between two magnets if the force of attraction between them
is 25 newtons. [2]
If a customer orders from Izzy’s Pizza, the delivery driver will always be sent from the site
closest to the customer’s home. The border on the graph represents the points which the
delivery drivers will not pass.
(a) Find the area covered, in km², by the delivery driver in the cell containing site A. [3]
(b) Find the equation of the line which would complete the Voronoi Diagram. Give your
answer in the form y = mx + b, where . [5]
(c) In the context of the question, interpret your answer to part (b). [2]
(a) If Daniel’s target weight is 85 kg, how much weight does he need to lose each week?
[2]
(b) Find a formula for his weight, W, in terms of the number of weeks, n. [2]
(c) If Daniel sticks to his plan, how many weeks will have passed when Daniel is 100 kg?
Write your answer to the nearest integer. [3]
There are 12 boys and 16 girls in a class. Two students are chosen at random from the class to
be monitors.
(a) Fill in the gaps on the tree diagram with the correct probabilities. [3]
(b) Calculate the probability that one boy and one girl will be chosen. [3]
Over the course of 20 days, two new student monitors are randomly chosen each day.
(c) Find the probability that the students chosen will both be girls on exactly 10
occasions. [2]
Ecomm is a company which supplies electricity. The total cost in dollars ($) for each
customer per month, C, can be modelled by the function,
C(k)=0.22k + 15
where k is the number of kilowatt hours of electricity used per customer. The total cost
includes a fixed monthly charge.
(b) Find the number of kilowatt hours used by a customer who pays $100 per month. [2]
Ecomm decides to vary its rates per State. The charge per kilowatt hour is different
depending on the State, and is given in the function correct to 2 decimal places.
(c) If Ecomm charges the maximum amount for each kilowatt hour used in the state of
New York, find the cost of using 800 kilowatt hours over a period of three months. [3]
The following diagram shows a sector of a circle of radius, r, with an angle at the centre
being .
(a) Find an expression for the perimeter of the sector, P, in terms of r and π. [2]
(c) With reference to your answer to part (b), describe the type of relationship which
exists between P and r. [2]
(a) Write an equation for the value, V, in terms of t, where t represents the number of
years since January 1st 2018. [2]
(b) Find the value of the car on January 1st 2024. Give your answer to 2 decimal places.
[2]
(c) Rebecca decides to sell the car when it is valued at $10,000. Calculate which year she
should sell the car. Give your answer to the nearest year. [3]
