Similes, Metaphors and Personification

To get your writing to the best it can be, there are certain techniques we
use to make it more interesting. Some of these are similes, metaphors
and personification.

Similes: When you compare something to something else using ‘like’ or

‘as’

Examples:

- the weather was as cold as ice

- the man was as strong as an ox
- this is like a nightmare
- the children were running around like animals.

Metaphors: These are similar to similes but instead of comparing

something, you say something IS something else.

Examples:

-this IS a nightmare!

-the children ARE animals

-that man is an ox

Personification: This is where you give an object human characteristics/

qualities.

Examples:

- the trees STOOD in the forest

- the building TOWERED above the people in the streets
- the haunted house was WAITING for someone to visit
- the sun SMILED down on the children in the playground
