SEM 2 2024/2025 SECTION 5 INDIVIDUAL ASSIGMENT 1 PART 1
NAME : MOHAMAD KHAIRUL NAZMAN BIN JAMALUDIN
NO. MATRIC : CF220003 SUBMISSION DATE : 8 APRIL 2024 PART 1 : Upon completion of Chapter 1, below are the important points : 1.What do civil engineer do? Civil engineer is need to prepare cost estimates for materials, equipment or labor to determine a project’s economic feasibility. Secondly civil engineer also used a design software to plan and design transportation systems, hydraulic system, and structures in line with industry and government standard.
2. Essential skill a civil engineer must have.
a) Leadership In civil engineering, leadership is more than just project management; it also including motivating and directing groups of people toward common objectives. A skilled civil engineer leads by setting an example, inspiring team members, and creating a cooperative atmosphere that encourages creativity and quality. Engineers that possess effective leadership are able to overcome obstacles, instill confidence, and see projects through to completion. b) Critical Thinking In civil engineering, problem-solving is fundamentally based on critical thinking. Engineers have to assess different solutions, understand complicated problems, and foresee possible dangers and outcomes. Civil engineers design strong and creative solutions that achieve project objectives while addressing societal requirements and environmental considerations. They do this by pushing conventions, questioning presumptions, and synthesizing different information. c) Teamwork Civil engineering is a team sport since most projects require cooperation between architects, planners, contractors, and stakeholders with varying specialties and viewpoints. An adept civil engineer is a team player who listens intently, shares ideas, and values the opinions of others. Good cooperation optimizes the team's aggregate intellect, improves creativity, and creates synergy, all of which contribute to better project outcomes.
3. CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD CIVIL ENGINEER
a) Confident Effective leadership in the field of civil engineering is based on confidence. An engineer that is self- assured in their skills demonstrates resilience and drive when faced with hurdles. They take on assignments with an optimistic outlook, taking accountability with ease and coming to well-informed conclusions. Engineers with confidence can negotiate the risks and complexity that come with civil projects, gaining the respect and credibility of stakeholders and colleagues alike. b) Responsibility The concept of responsibility emphasizes the moral and ethical duties civil engineers have to society welfare, environmental sustainability, and public safety. A conscientious engineer follows rules of ethics, places emphasis on safety during the design and construction phases, and takes the long-term effects of their choices into account. They assume responsibility for their job, guaranteeing honesty and accountability all the way through the project's life. Responsible engineering practices protect the public interest and preserve the reputation of the profession by reducing risks and fostering a sense of trust and confidence in the profession. c) Adapted In the ever-changing and dynamic field of civil engineering, flexibility is a critical skill for success. Technology breakthroughs, alterations in regulations, and changing project requirements force engineers to constantly adapt. An adaptive engineer is one that welcomes change, keeps up with new developments in the field, and actively pursues possibilities for career advancement. As problems change and chances for optimization and improvement arise, they exhibit adaptability in their approach to problem-solving, making necessary adjustments to tactics and procedures.
4. THE TEHNOLOGY SPECTRUM
a) Scientists Participate in scientific research and generate data for reports or publications in reputable scientific journals. b) Engineering Technologists Technologists are not taught the intellectual abilities and theoretical understanding required to advance the state of the art; instead, they are taught the existing design practice. c) Technicians Often lack the scientific and mathematical expertise of engineers and engineering technologists, but they excel at certain support tasks required by R&D teams, including surveying, drafting, inspection, installation, field service, and maintenance. d) Craftspeople Essential members of the technical team who create the initial units that physically represent the designs created by the engineers. They are skilled tool and die makers who frequently exhibit creativity and resourcefulness. Furthermore, by recommending simplifications, simpler machining techniques, and the avoidance of potential service issues, they significantly contribute to the project's design. 5) ENGINEERING IN SOCIENTY a) Infrastructure Development Important infrastructure, such highways, bridges, airports, and water supply systems, is planned and constructed by engineers. These structures improve communities' access to opportunities and necessary services by facilitating mobility, enhancing connectivity, and fostering economic development. b) Technology Innovation Through the creation of new technologies and the advancement of old ones, engineers promote innovation. Engineers are essential to influencing the future of technology and propelling progress across industries, from clean energy and renewable energy discoveries to information technology and telecommunications innovations. c) Environmental Sustainability By creating environmentally friendly solutions and putting policies in place to lessen their negative effects on the environment, engineers support environmental sustainability. They create energy-efficient infrastructure, manage waste, and control pollution, all of which contribute to the preservation of natural resources and the fight against climate change. d) Healthcare By creating medical equipment, diagnostic instruments, and healthcare technology that enhance patient care and results, engineers innovate in the healthcare industry. They promote breakthroughs in biomedical engineering, optimize healthcare delivery systems, and design hospital buildings, all of which progress medical science and healthcare.
