3. RECUIREMEmS

3.1 Rivets. The rivet type, size,and msterialshallbe as s~if ied on


the engineeringdrawing,parts list or specification.
3.1.1 Rivet hardling. The rivets,as furnished,shallbe free fran dust,
dirt or gr-se. If the rivetsare furnishedwith a speciallubricantmating
the coatingshall not lx?remved by solventsor staining. Lubricantmmval
will resultin faultypull stem operation.

3.2 l?quimnmt. Equipmnt for installation


of self-plugging
blind rivets
shall be standardheadertoolsas recommded by rivetmnuf acturer.
3.3 Rivet holes (countersunk
rivets).

3.3.1 Drillinq. Drillingof rivetholes shallbe as follows:

a) Oversize,oblong,and irregularshapedholes shallbe cause for


rejection.
b) All holes shallbe drillednormal (at 90”) to tie mrking surface.
c) mtrm pressureshall not be appiisdand holes diall not ~ ~ched
throughwith the drill.

d) When drillingthroughmre than one sheet,hold the sheetssecurely


togetherm there is no misalignmentof holesdue to shiftinqor
separaLionof the sheets.

e) Beforeoarts are rivetedtwether, all chips,burrs,and foreim


mteriai shallbe remved fiom mting surf&es. Burrsmy be &mved
fram rivet holes by chamferingto a depth not to ~ 10 percentof
the stock tiicknessor 0.032 inch,whicheveris less.

3.3.2 Hole size. Pilot drill parts in amordance with tableI and held
togetherwith skin fastenersin altermte holes. After insbsllation of
fasteners,finishdrilledholes not obstructedby fastenersin acwrdance with
table 1.

3.3.3 Countersinkirq.Unlessotherwisespscifi~ on the engineering


drawingor specification countersinking shallbe used for all flush type
rivetaad countersinking size and dimensionallimitationsshallbe in
accordancewith figure1 and tile II. Chuntersintia shall be producedwith a
tool that incorporatesan autanaticstop countersinking feature. The
countersinkingtool shall be at 90° to the wxk surfaceand held steady
throughoutthe cuttingcycle. The holes stallbe clean and concentric.
Countersinksshallbe free of chattermrks and concentricwith the rivet
kles .

3.6 Fluehneeslimits. Unlessotherwise-if ied hereinor on drawings,


fluahnesslimitsshall k 0.010 inch stove or 0.005 inch balm the surface.

3.7 Rmmving improgerlyinstalledself-pluqgi ng blirririvets. Driveout


the stem using a punch approximatelythe sem diamter or ansiller than the
stein.Use the hole in the rivet heed as a pilot and drill throughthe head
only. Use a drill the .5am size as the rivetshank. Remve tie rivet head.
= out the rivet shankwith a punchwhich is the same dismsteror ems.ller
than the shank. If the shankwill not push out, drill out the shankusing a
drill @ to the shankdiamter. Exercisecare b avoid enlargingthe hole.
If the hole is enlargsd,en oversizeor next largersize rivetmy be
installedwhen all of the follcwingconditionsare mt:

a. Edge distancead pitchmat remin withindrawinglimits. If


drawingsdo not stateedge distancelimits,edge distanceshallnot be lees
than that specifiedin paragraph3.3.5.

b. The quantityof holes to be enlargedshallbe not greaterthan


10% of the holes in any one rivetpstternattachingtm item in me finished
assemblynor imre than tm adjacentrivetsbe enlargedwithoutapprovalfrcxn.

3.8 Remving hp roperlyinstalledhollw blind rivets. Driveout the


rivetusinga drill the sane size as the rivethole. U.= the hole in the
rivetas a pilot for the drill. Exercisecare to avoid enlargingthe bole.
If the hole is enlargei,an oversizeor next largersize rivetmy be
installd providd the conditionsof 3.7 of this specificationare mat.

3.9 Corrosionprevention. The rivet nole,muntersink, and rivetshall


be mated with zinc chranateprimerconformingto Tr-P-1757prior to
installation.‘Iherivetshall be ‘installedwhile the pr- is in the wet
condition.
3.10 Worlmsnship. Instillationof self-pluggingblind rivetsshallbe
accm@lished in a worbnmlike mnner. Rivet assembliesshallbe of uniform
qualityand free fran cracks,gap, sharpedges,burrs,lcme P=*, or other
defectswhich might renderthe assenblieaunauib.blefor its intendedp~.

3.3.4 Piercinq. Piercingtmls which prcducetrue and clear holes


equivalentto acceptabledrilledholesmy be used with writtenapprovalf mm
the procuringactivity.

3.3.5 Edge mrqin. W rivetedge msrgin (thedistancefran the center


of the rivethole to the msreat sxigeof the psrt tn t= riveted)shallbe not
less than 2 tb the diamter of the rivetunlessotherwisespecifiedon
applicabledrawingsor specifications.

3.4 -. All flushhead rivetsof the self-pluggingblind typs shsll


be shavedwith a Shego Shaveror an equivalentshaverwhichwill not cause
lmsening of the stem. AU self-plugging blind rivetashall be inapectd
beforeand after shaving.

3.5 Riveting.

3.5.1 Installation qrip. Verifygrip lengthspecifiedon drawingtefore


installingrivetsince the lengthis baaed on naninslmaterialgrip. Do not
installspecifiedrivetwhere actualmaterialgrip is greaterthan that shorn
on the rivet selectorgage.

3.5.2 Rivetingoperation. Check pro-r functioningof rivetgun by


simulatingactualworkingconditionson scrapmtal of aam thicknessas work
piece. t+,ske
certainthat the gun & the properpullinghead and the proper ~
draw bolt instilled.

a. Insertrivet in hole and place gun over rivet,or insertrivet in gun


and then into the hole,inkingcertiinthat the stem of the rivet is ~
cmpletely insertedinto the slot of the draw bolt.

b. The sheetabeing rivetedshallbe held firmlytcgetherwhile


installingrivets.

c. Press on gun with sufficientpressureto hold the rivet firmlyagainat


the work. DO not increasepressureunlessnecessaryto bring the
parta being rivetd into contact. The pullinghead of the gun shall
be properlycenteredon the rivetand held ~icdar to the wark.

d. Actuategun triggerand hold until gun strokeis canpleted. The


strokeis cuntroll~ by the sleeveand spacerinstilledin the
pullinghead. !rhesleevehas a visiblewQite dot which will indicate ~
the @ of the strokeand also the’grip lengthby beaming visibleat ;
the hole which is mrked for the grip lengthbeing used. Release
triggerand rsmve the gun. pull the stem cmpletely throughthe
riveton all hollm typs rivets.

e. When all holes that are not obstructedby fastenershave been prqerly
riveted,rerrove the fastenersand finishdrillingthe remining heles
in accordancewith 3.3.2ad rivet in accordancewith a, b, c and d
above.

4. QUALITYASSURIWX PREVISIONS

4.1 Responsibility for inamstion. Unlessotherwisespecifiedin the


contractor ourchaseorder, the contractoris resmnaible for the performnce

4.1.1 Rescomibilityfor Ccx@iance. All itms shallmet all

4.2 Classificationof inspections. The inspectionrequiremnffispecified


hereinare classifid as follows(see4.3).

4.3 Wslity conformanceinspection.

4.3.1 Infection requiremnts. ‘lbdetermineconformanceto Section3,


installationof blind rivetsshallbe performd in accordancewith and
ins~ed to all the reguiremntaof Section3 of this specification.

4.3.1.1 Rivet hole size inspection. After holesare drilledin


conformancewith 3.3.2,a spot checkon 10 @rCent of the holeson each item
shall be made with a “go” ad “no go” gage to insurepro- tolerances. If
discrepancies are found in this quantity,a 100 percentinspectionshallbe
usideon that item

4.3.1.2 push-outtest. All self-plugging rivet stms shall,after


shiving,withatarda 20 wund push-outload. ‘l& lead shallbe a@i& with a
device,such as an accuratelycalibrated,springlcded, W tester,which
will exert 20 pmnda of pressureon the rivet stm. No lcosestems shall be
allowd . The centerplug of structuralrivetsshallnot be pushsrl out.
Rivetafailingto withstandthe test shallbe replacedin accordancewith 3.7.

4.3.1.3 Loose rivets. AU rivetsshall fit tightlywith m mvemnt


allcwed. All lmse rivets shallte rsmwd in accordancewith paragraph3.7
and replacedin accordare with 3.5.

to be insertedbetweenthe sheetsfrcnnany directionfsr enough to
touch the rivet shank.

f. The occurrenceof any gap around60 psrcentof the circumferenceof the :


head. In the otier 40 percent,gaps whichallow a fader gauge kr9er
than 0.004 inch to be inserted.

9. On buttonhead rivets,if a 0.002 inch feelergauge can be insertedfar ~


enoughunder the head b touchthe shank.

4.3.2 Visual rivet inspection.

4.3.2.1 Protrusionof rivet. When the blind side of the wrk is readily
visible,the extensionof the rivet shankbeyondthe materialmy be observed
beforerivetingto ascertainthat the shankproperlyprotrudesthroughthe
material. The propersmunt of protrusion&fore pullingis 0.047 inch to
0.125 inch.

4.3.2.2 Countersinking.The holes shallbe inspectedto insure


conformanceto requiremmts of 3.3.3,figure1 and table II.
4.3.2.3 Properinstallation.When the blind side of the work is visible,
scnnsvariationsof the characteristic

4.3.3 Corrosionpreventiontest. The rivethole,countersinkand rivet


shallbe inspectedto insureconformancewith 3.9 and lT-P-1757.
4.4 Non- liance. If the ample failsto pass the requiremmta in table
I, the manufacturershallnotifythe procuringactivityand the mgnizant
ins~cion activityof such failureand take mrrective actionon the
mterials or prccesses,or both, as warranted,ti m all unitiof pr~uction
which can k mrrected and which te~e manufacturedwitn essentiallythe sam
mterials and processes,and which are mnsiderad subjectto the same failure.
Acceptanceand shipnat of the prcductshallbe dismntinued until corrective
actionacceptableto the qualifyingactivityhas been taken. titer the

sampleunits. In the event of failureafter the manufacturer’scorrective
