UNIT 4 INSTINCT OR INTELLECT?
i. ITEM 1 WRITING TECHNIQUES
i.i Writing a summary of an article or a text.
Explain what have you done in each step for the process before writing
your final draft.
FIRST STEP:
First, I read the text carefully, then I recognize the topic centence or thesis, also
I chosed the main ideas in the text.
SECOND STEP:
I made WH-questions to organize my ideas before writing. For instance;
Who is the autor?
What does the text talk about?
Which is the thesis?
What is the main idea in the first paragraph?
These kind of centences helped me to synthezise the main ideas from the text
I’d read.
THIRD STEP:
Before starting writing the summary paragrapgh, I categorized the main ideas.
First the topic, second the thesis, then the ideas that were clear for me. Also I
used paraphrasing.
Topic: If animals have extreme perception or intelligance.
Thesis: Clever Hans and zeisure alert dogs showed that intelligence is more
than extreme perception, it is what they can develop from their extreme
perception.
Main Ideas:
-Animal’s abilities don’t make them more intelligent than humans.
-Seizure alert dogs didn’t acquired the ability to predict seizures.
-Clever Hans was able to count by his own self.
Finally I used these ideas to write my summary paragraph, but I paraphrased
them.

WRITING DRAFT
In Extreme perception and animal intelligence, authors Temple
Grandin and Catherine Johnson discusses about if animals just have
extreme perception or intelligence. They made own analizes about
zeisure alert dogs and Clever Hans.
Although animals like dog can smell thing that are imposible for
humans to semell, doesn't become thay into genius, it makes them
dogs. But some of them, using their perceptual abilities, develop their
cognition to act. Aparently, the extreme perception that seizure alert
dogs have is acquired, but it is false, many people tried to train them,
but they failed. There are seizure respond dogs that are trained act in
a well way attendig zeisure situations. Many dogs are trained to
respond to seizures, not to predict seizures.
Clever Hans was a hourse wich owner aseverates that he can count.
He could answer mathematical questions. But Oskar Pfungst, a
psychologist, tried to show that Hans wasn't counting, he states,
"Hans wasn't really counting because it was unconscius about it". He
uses clever Hans story to show that humans that think animal has
intelligent or can count are crazy. But tha owner of Hans wasn't agre.
He mentioned, "No one has ever been able to train a
hourse to do waht hans did." Hans trained himself, no one teached
him how to count or read different people to know what they are
trying to say.
Cathering concluded writing, "What makes the action of seizure alert
dogs and Clever Hans, a sign of high intelligence, is that they didn't
have to do what they did". They showed that intelligence in animals
isn't an instintive ability or perception, is what they can developfrom
their extreme perception.

SUMMARY OF READING ONE
In Extreme perception and animal intelligence, authors Temple Grandin and
Catherine Johnson discusses about if animals just have extreme perception or
intelligence. They did their own analize about zeisure alert dogs and Clever
Hans.
Although animals like dogs can smell things that are imposible for humans to
smell, doesn't means that they are more intelligent than us. It just makes them
dogs. But some of them, using their perceptual abilities, develop their cognition
to act. Apparently, the extreme perception that seizure alert dogs have is
acquired. But it is false, many people tried to train them to develop this
perceptual ability, but they failed. Also there are seizure respond dogs that are
trained to act in a right way attending zeisure situations. Many dogs are trained
to respond to seizures, not to predict seizures.
Clever Hans was a horse whom owner asseverated that he could count. He
could answer mathematical questions. But Oskar Pfungst, a psychologist, tried
to show that Hans wasn't counting, he states, "Hans wasn't really counting
because he was unconscius about human movements". He used clever Hans
history to show that humans who thought that animals had intelligence or could
count were crazy. But the owner of Hans disagree with him. He mentioned, "No
one has ever been able to train a horse to do what Hans did." Hans trained by
itself, nobody taught him how to count and read different people to know what
they are trying to say.
To conclude, Cadering and Grandin state that "What made of the action of
seizure alert dogs and Clever Hans, a sign of high intelligence, is that they
didn't have to do what they did". Clever Hans and zeisure alert dogs showed
that intelligence is more than extreme perception, it is what they can develop
from their extreme perception.

UNIT 5 TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING?

I. ITEM 1 WRITING TECHNIQUES
I.I Writing a descriptive essay (Explain what have you done in
each step fo rthe process before writing your final draft)

First, I used an idea web to organize some ideas and topics. I wrote the place to
pass my ideal vacations, the activities that I would like to do, the emotions, and
what kind of food would be the best.
SECOND STEP:
Fort he first paragraph, I made sentences to have a developed idea about the
description essay. First I wrote the hook to begin the essay. After it I thought
about the bacground. Finally I decided the thesis statement.
About the second, third, and fourth paragraph, I wrote the main ideas and the
details about them.
To the conclutions, I tried to make a reflection and affirmation the thesis
statement.
THIRD STEP
I articulated every main idea with the thesis statement. I chose the title and
started writing focusing on the thesis.
II. ITEM 2 VOCABULARY USAGE
II.I Synthesize (Page 138 student’s book) Usage vocabulary from unit
5 (at least 7 words)

In my personal opinion, I think that if a double life span becomes a reality, our
society would invetably change in a wrong way. Get married several times could
be normal, maybe geting six or seven brief marriages won’t be a problem and if
means that loyalty and love concept will change radically. Many values would
change and it’s a big problema because they influenced in our society history.
Another problema might be that If you get married with many people, they
wouldn’t be tolerable with others and wether they aren’t empathic, they could
behave impetuously. We might think that this society will be insufferable, in the
economy, because technology could be better and production may increase
inmensurably, but it is wrong. As popullation will increase, companies migh be
affected because a lack of workplace. So it will generate unemployment and
many youthful talents and ideas would be refused by before concepts, so they
will not dominate institutions like universities, corporations, and else. So a
negative consecuence will be a steady stagnation.
III. ITEM 3 UNIT PROJECT
Write an opinion essay about one of the topics. Use vocabulary (at
least 7 words) and gramar (present perfect, present simple or
present perfect continous)

Longevity. Since the beginning of human history, the duration of life has been
talked about as one of the most mysterious and presumptuous ideas. In our
days, Cientififcs have invented a medical technology that increase the life time
without diseases or infirmities. That will affect in a negative way the society,
politc, and economy around the world
Sociobiological classes will be generated due to lack of economic equality
to access this technology. This technology is very expensive, and only rich
people have money to use this technology. Also it’s proved that it improve
human health and life, so inevitably that will stablish two kinds of humans, an
improved one and a normal one and a utterly clear consequence is the cocial
división in two parts, te rich people with improved genetic and poverty people
with a outdated genetic. Dr. Van Doore said, “Society has been in conflict since
the begining, but with this technology, might be a war between humans.”
Every aspect of a nation is ultimatly determinated by politic power. The
world has been changing by globalism, but with this new medical technology,
the structure of national and international relation ships between powerful
countries would change. And for this time will have established a new system of
politic because of the vigorous and vitality of people who might live a lot of
years most than now. Nowadays, many politicians are chilly towards public
problems and make things with convenience (corruption). They punctually earn
money by public business, so isn't an empathyless and extremist mind which
does not stand this kind of political management.
Normal life timing permit to our society value a moral law. As society we
have been debating about ideaologies and most of us fond one, but if people
live longer, probbably, they won’t be responssible about their actions. They will
think they have time to do good things, so will live without consciousness.
To conclude, I am immeasurably worried about this technology that will
affect our society, politic, and economy in every country. I have
investigated this kind of technology for ten years and I concluded that it isn’t
what looks like. If people live more time, They won’t respect the law, our politc
will change and new social clases will emerge. And as a political scientist said,
“Our society experiments hard situations such as economic problems and
pandemics, but we can’t break the wall built by nature to live, so we have to
accept the reality,” There fore I propose you avoid the use of this medical
technology and if you want to be healthy, you should live eating healthy food
and doing exercise.

Title: Living my ideal vacation
Write your essay:
“Vacations are the best times to be yourself and forget troubles” my father used
to say. As a dream achieved I woke up in the lordly city, Ayacucho. And today
morning I felt a relaxing cold breeze in my limited room that allowed me to reflex
on my being at Ayacucho. Truly I needed this vacation because I have been
carrying problems with depression. But with heart, I can asseverate that
vacations are the scape door where you enjoy your existence .
Vacation on Ayacucho gave me spiritual freedom from life's hurts. I was
making a tourism route to visit thirty-three churches in a day. Utterly that sounds
crazy, but it was possible. When I entered at every church I could see amazing
religious strange symbols about old ages humanity. Despite this, I have been
listening God’s sermons for two eternal hours at every church. At the last
church, a priest with long white mantle received me and mysteriously I felt a
broken in my mind, which inevitably could watch the dawn after years of
darkness. These experiences generate new positive feeling about life.
Walking in nature relaxes you and clears your mind. I can remember in
detail when I went to the Inca temple, Viscalhuaman. This temple was regarding
enormous old warriors that fortunately allowed us to go. I enjoyed walking
between awesome ancient mountains. The atmosphere there was incredible, an
ideal weather to walk, beautiful and colorful landscapes, animals were
everywhere, birds playing to sing and hawks flying breaking sound barrier. I
walked for three hours to arrive at that ancestral place, furthermore, it has been
sweeping with dark voices in my mind about life, there I started to link with
nature and it forged me a positive conscious.
Good food and friends are the most valuable things to spend time on a
vacation. I have been knowing to Carl, a French tourist, who is bringing me to a
restaurant that prepares dishes for the gods. I can savor the pachamanca, an
ancestral dish, the “cuy chactado” also. Inevitably I die to eat them. Incredibly
he knows many homes of foods to visit. I have been going to Tahuantinsuyo
restaurant, but he showed me a small place were food gives life. I think If I
return to Ayacucho, I will call him to meet together to pass an amazing time
eating.
This vacation is what I needed. Now I can return to my home and continue with
my hard daily routine, but with broken chains, a clear mind, and golden
memories. Reflexing I state that ideal vacations are the way to enjoy the
sweetness of living.

Teacher’s comment: Good thesis but check comas and place them where
necessary Good job, you have a good start on developing an essay. However,
you still need to work on topics like spelling, grammar, capitalization and word
order
V. ITEM 5 Attach draft with the corrections you have made (underline
them)

UNIT 6 MAKING A DIFERENCE
1- ITEM 1 SYNTHESIZE page 169
NGO for volunteering service
Manhattan, Wall Street 701
July 21, 2023
Mensah Dean
132, Village, New York 12401
Dear Mensah Dean:
By this letter, I am writing to you a personal opinion about mandatory
volunteering service based on my experience.
Mandatory Volunteering service isn’t good for teenagers and youths that are
finishing high school or the university. Although many people learn to be
responsible, others just get stressed and waste time doing activities that they
don't like to do. In my case, I valorated my volunteering service, so I feelt proud.
But most of them want to use time to practice a sport, learn languages, study
more time, and else. So Students want to be free to do good things with a great
motivation and energy. Despite of some students, by responsibility, could do
volunteering service just by commitment, many others will feel overwhelmed. In
my experience, when I was a chil I fixed up twenty bikes for poor children, but I
made the decition to do it, so after that I have been keeping on volunteering
service by my own decition. If you make something for your own, you will feel
free and happy to help others. For instance, I felt happy and enthusiastic when I
saw the children’s reaction to the bike donation. And that motivated me to build
more than three hundred bikes for abandoned children and women who live in
women’s shelter. I can say that n mandatory volunteering service you don’t do
things with passion as I made restoring old bikes because it depends on you,
you have to decide what activities use your time and energy.
I hope my experience about volunteering service helps you to reflex about
mandatory volunteering service.
Sincerely,
Anderson Aguilar

2- ITEM 2. CREATE page 174

No, I didn’t. Fixing the first bike was a challenge for me. I didn’t was passionate
about it because for me it was like I was sitting around with unimportant things.
But When I donated the first bike and after looking kids’ reaction, I felt inspired to
fix up and donate bikes.

I though that this proposal wasn't serious, but I was wrong. The donations of bike
were achieved because Justin made a good management of time and resources. I
ended up being surprised about that.
Many people don't figure out what to do in their free time, others can feel fulfilled
servicing to the community. But the most important reason is that we have to learn
to donate our time, energy and things to the community development because it
benefits every body. Who does it should feel proud.

Mandatory volunteering service is an oxymoronic activity because you can't

manage your time and money doing things that you want or need to do.For
example, at the university many majors feel indignant when they find out that
to graduate they need to have completed a volunteering service.

What do you think about volunteering?

In my opinion, volunteering action is the passion for the wellness of
others, aboviusly those actions inspire many people to help others. I
admire people and institutions who work to develope people’s life who
needs help. Many goverments don’t manage correctly the public
institutions to help people, so volunteering is very important. Our society
has been challenging many social problems. For instance, poverty;
there are many ancient people and children whos live without home.
There for, people who is determineted to do volunteering are héroes for
me.
4- ITEM 4 SELF REFLECTION
Reflect at a paragraph level from the writing techniques you have
learned and what it is the impact on your future as a learned of
English.
I have been studying English for more than three years. In the beginning, I
didn’t have an objective, but now I have understood that Enlgish language is the
perfect instrument to work in the future. My mother once said, “English will open
doors for you”. Now I am near to finish this advance level of English at Icpna,
and am really happy for that. At this course, I learned to write essays and
summary paragraphs which I suppose I will need because of my carrier, so I am
thrilled to know the structure of an essay, how to write or recognize a thesis
statement, I am proud about that. I am utterly grateful with my parents and
teachers to be implicated in that achieve. I want to major at political science, so
I need English to work with more efficiency. I have planned to travel to Europe
or The USA in some years, so I will need to dominate English. I think this
course will help me a lot in develop writing skills, to understand long texts and to
write correctly an essay.
