THEME PLOT SCRIPT ACTING SETTING, COSTUMES & MAKEUP DIRECTION PHOTGRAPHY/CINEMATOGRAPHY EDITING SOUND In analyzing a film: o examine each element separately o how well they work as separate entities o how well they work together Objective: advance the narrative The following slides will examine the 9 elements and present you with a set of questions to ask yourself in analyzing each element Theme is the basic idea that a film expresses. Questions : o What is the basic idea of the film o What is the film about or concerned with o Is the theme treated clearly The plot is the storyline; it is what is happening. Questions: o How does the plot develop the story o Is the “who does what, where, when and how” communicated clearly? o Is the plot interesting The script is the plot in detail. Questions: o Is the idea of the film clear to you o Does the storytelling flow or does it seem disjointed o Is there too much dialogue o Does the dialogue seem real / natural The ability to play a role so well that the viewer forgets that the actor is not the character s/he plays. Questions: o Did I identify with the actor o Did s/he cause me to respond emotionally to the film o Was I conscious of who was playing the part Three aspects of filmmaking – setting, costumes and makeup – aid: actors in creating effective performances help create atmosphere define character help make the film seem real Questions: o Did they help to make the film better o Did they create the right atmosphere o Were settings, costumes and makeup appropriate and accurate (if it is a period film) It is difficult for a casual viewer to determine the role of the director in a film. Every aspect of the film is the director’s responsibility. Questions: o Did all of the components of the film work well together o Was the film so well put together that it appears to be seamless Is the visual interpretation of the script Is the visualization of the Director’s vision Is executed by the Director of Photography (the DP) Questions: o Did the cinematography seem to blend with all the other components o Did the photography achieve the specific images that would best tell the story Film editing is the art of assembling raw footage into a coherent sequence (into a storyline). Editing of the film should not be noticeable Questions: o Was there a smooth flow in the film from beginning to end o Did the editing help you see and understand the film better There are three kinds of sound for film: Natural sounds: • are sounds that give a scene a feeling of authenticity. Music: • is used in a film to set a particular mood Dialogue: • Is used to give the viewer information about characters and/or the action Questions: o Did sound add or detract from the film o Did it make the film seem more real o Or did it interrupt your viewing enjoyment The success of a film depends on the effective execution of these components Film is a Communal art form and relies on a group of people to realize the Director’s vision
