 In analyzing a film:
o examine each element separately
o how well they work as separate entities
o how well they work together
 Objective: advance the narrative
 The following slides will examine the 9
elements and present you with a set of
questions to ask yourself in analyzing each
element
 Theme is the basic idea that a film
expresses.
 Questions :
o What is the basic idea of the film
o What is the film about or concerned with
o Is the theme treated clearly
 The plot is the storyline; it is what is
happening.
 Questions:
o How does the plot develop the story
o Is the “who does what, where, when and
how” communicated clearly?
o Is the plot interesting
 The script is the plot in detail.
 Questions:
o Is the idea of the film clear to you
o Does the storytelling flow or does it seem
disjointed
o Is there too much dialogue
o Does the dialogue seem real / natural
 The ability to play a role so well that the
viewer forgets that the actor is not the
character s/he plays.
 Questions:
o Did I identify with the actor
o Did s/he cause me to respond emotionally to
the film
o Was I conscious of who was playing the part
 Three aspects of filmmaking – setting,
costumes and makeup – aid:
 actors in creating effective performances
 help create atmosphere
 define character
 help make the film seem real
 Questions:
o Did they help to make the film better
o Did they create the right atmosphere
o Were settings, costumes and makeup
appropriate and accurate (if it is a period film)
 It is difficult for a casual viewer to determine
the role of the director in a film.
 Every aspect of the film is the director’s
responsibility.
 Questions:
o Did all of the components of the film work
well together
o Was the film so well put together that it
appears to be seamless
 Is the visual interpretation of the script
 Is the visualization of the Director’s vision
 Is executed by the Director of Photography
(the DP)
 Questions:
o Did the cinematography seem to blend with
all the other components
o Did the photography achieve the specific
images that would best tell the story
 Film editing is the art of assembling raw
footage into a coherent sequence (into a
storyline).
 Editing of the film should not be noticeable
 Questions:
o Was there a smooth flow in the film from
beginning to end
o Did the editing help you see and understand
the film better
 There are three kinds of sound for film:
 Natural sounds:
• are sounds that give a scene a feeling of
authenticity.
 Music:
• is used in a film to set a particular mood
 Dialogue:
• Is used to give the viewer information about
characters and/or the action
 Questions:
o Did sound add or detract from the film
o Did it make the film seem more real
o Or did it interrupt your viewing enjoyment
 The success of a film depends on the effective
execution of these components
 Film is a Communal art form and relies on a
group of people to realize the Director’s
vision
