Rationale
Social media refers to online platforms and applications
that enable users to create, share, and interact with
content and connect with others in real time.
In the Philippines, social media usage is widespread, with
the country consistently ranking among the top users
globally in terms of time spent online, making it a
significant factor in students' daily lives. This high usage
has implications for academic performance, as students
often juggle time spent on social media with their
academic responsibilities.
In Dapitan City National High School, social media is
frequently used as both a source of information for
schoolwork and a platform for socializing.
However, limited studies focus on how specific patterns
of social media use directly affect academic performance
in the Philippine public school context.
This study aims to examine the role of social media in
either enhancing or detracting from students' academic
outcomes, particularly in public schools.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Context and Background: Start by providing the context or background
1
of the issue, explaining why the topic is important and relevant.
State the Problem: Clearly articulate the specific issue or gap that
2
needs to be addressed. Make sure the problem is precise and measurable.
Justification: Explain the significance of the problem, highlighting the
3
consequences if it remains unresolved. This should emphasize the impact
on relevant stakeholders (e.g., students, institutions, society).
Research Questions: State the primary research questions which your
4
study will answer.

Despite the increasing use of social media among students, its
impact on academic performance remains unclear, particularly in
Dapitan City National High School. While social media provides
access to valuable resources, it also poses potential distractions
that can affect study habits. This study aims to investigate how
students' social media usage patterns affect their academic
performance, with the goal of informing better digital literacy and
study strategies.
It specifically seeks to answer the question:
1.What is the impact of social media usage on the academic
performance of students in public schools?
SIGNIFICANCE OF
THE STUDY
How will your study benefit
different groups of people?
For students, this study will help them
understand how their social media habits
influence their academic performance,
allowing them to make informed decisions
about balancing online activities and studies.
For teachers, the findings can guide the
development of strategies to incorporate
social media in a way that enhances learning
while minimizing its potential distractions.
For parents, the study will provide insights
into how their children’s use of social media
affects their educational outcomes,
enabling them to offer better support and
guidance at home.
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF
THE STUDY
The scope and delimitation of a study
define the boundaries and limitations of
the research. The scope outlines the
coverage of the research, such as the
subjects, location, and timeframe, while
the delimitation specifies what the study
does not cover, often due to constraints
like time, resources, or focus.
This study focuses on examining the effects of social
media usage on the academic performance of senior
high school students in DCNHS during the 2023-2024
academic year. The research will analyze students’
social media habits, including the amount of time spent
on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok,
and how this correlates with their academic
performance based on their grades. The study will use
a quantitative research methodology, employing
surveys to gather data on students' social media
usage and academic performance, and statistical
analysis to determine the relationship between the
two variables.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
Conceptual definitions explain terms by
describing the general meaning or idea
behind them, often grounded in theory or
general understanding.
Operational Definitions: Define terms in the
context of how they will be measured or
used within the study, ensuring clarity for
both abstract concepts and concrete
variables.
Social media refers to digital platforms that allow users
to create, share, and interact with content and
communicate with others in real time, including social
networking sites, blogs, and media-sharing platforms. In
this study, social media refers to online platforms such as
Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok that students use for
communication, entertainment, and accessing information.

Academic Performance: Academic performance generally

refers to how well a student meets educational standards
set by institutions, which can include grades, test scores,
and overall achievement in learning objectives. Academic
performance is operationally defined as the students’
grade point average (GPA) during the school year.
