CHEMICAL REACTION ENGINEERING
TIME : 3 HOURS MAX MARKS : 80
TOTAL NO OF QUESTIONS: 4 TOTAL NO OF PRINTED PAGES: 3
INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES:
1. Assume suitable data wherever necessary
2. Non programmable scientific calculators are allowed
3. Black figures to the right indicate full marks

1 a) Liquid A decomposes by first-order kinetics, and in a [5] CO1 L3

batch reactor 50% of A is converted in a 5-minute run.
How much longer would it take to reach 75%
conversion?
b) Using integral method, derive the expression for a [5] CO1 L2
second order reaction 2A → B in terms of
concentration as well as conversion.
c) Stoichiometric proportions of N2 and H2 are mixed in a [5] CO1 L3
constant volume batch reactor for NH3 manufacture.
The total pressure inside the reactor was monitored at
regular time intervals. Initial pressure inside the reactor
was 10 atm and after 30 minutes, it was 7 atm.
Determine the partial pressures of N2, H2 and NH3 after
30 minutes.
d) Find the first-order rate constant for the disappearance [5] CO1 L3
of A in the gas reaction 2A → R if, on holding the
pressure constant, the volume of the reaction mixture,
starting with 80% A, decreases by 20% in 3 min.

[1]
2 a) Gaseous reactant A decomposes as follows by first [5] CO2 L3
order kinetics:
A → 3R
-rA(mol/lit.min) = 0.6CA

Find the conversion of A in a 50% A and 50% inert

3
feed (ν0 = 180 lit/min, CA0 = 300 mmol/lit) to a 1 m
mixed flow reactor.
b) A second order reaction 2A → R takes place in a [5] CO2 L3
mixed flow reactor. We plan to replace our present
mixed flow reactor with one having double the volume.
For the same aqueous feed (10 mol A/lit) and the
same feed rate find the new conversion. The present
conversion is 70%.
c) At present the elementary liquid-phase reaction [10] CO3 L4
A + B → R + S takes place in a plug flow reactor using
equimolar quantities of A and B. Conversion is 96%,
CA0 = CB0 = 2 mol/lit. If a mixed flow reactor ten times
as large as the plug flow reactor were hooked up in
series with the existing unit, which unit should come
first and by what fraction could production be increased
for that setup?
3 a) What is effectiveness factor? Explain its significance. [5] CO4 L2
b) With a neat diagram, explain the steps involved in a [5] CO4 L2
solid catalyzed reaction.
c) A gas containing reactant A (2 mol/m3) is fed at a rate [10] CO4 L3
of 1 m3/h to a mixed flow reactor containing 3 kg
catalyst. At steady state, the output composition of the
reactor is found to be 0.5 mol/m3. Find the rate
equation for the decomposition of A in the following
cases :-
a) A → R, n = 0.5
b) A → 3R, n = 1

[2]
4 a) A batch of uniform spherical solids is treated with gas [5] CO5 L3
in a uniform environment. Solid is converted to give a
non-flaking product according to the Shrinking Core
Model (SCM). Conversion of solids is 93.6% in 6
hours, while time required for complete conversion is
10 hours. Determine the rate-controlling mechanism.
b) With a neat diagram, explain Shrinking Core Model [5] CO5 L2
(SCM) for a gas-solid reaction with a gaseous product.

c) Write a short note on using two film theory to [5] CO6 L2

understand gas-liquid reactions.
d) What is Hatta number? Explain its significance. [5] CO6 L2
