Liking or falling in love with what one does is happiness, but doing what one likes is

freedom. As ironic as it may sound, I lost myself in service to others in society and, in the

process, ended up finding my life, passion, and happiness—the unexplainable joy of bringing

change and light to other people’s lives. I have a degree in social work and did my internship at a

housing agency as a supportive housing specialist, where I helped families and individuals

maintain their housing and assisted them with their activities of daily living. The onset of

COVID-19 came at a critical time in my profession, and since the pandemic is present, I have

continued to work as a caregiver for approximately 3 years. The experience gained in this

profession has been phenomenal, helping me realize that compassion is never enough; one must

act. At first, I wanted to get a degree in social work to help individuals, but as I worked with

clients as a caregiver, I realized that, to help my clients sustain their housing and function in this

dynamic world, it starts with their health.

As a result, these experiences have shaped my future career goals of dreaming to become

a nurse practitioner someday. Most of the clients I have worked with had health issues that made

a huge impact on their lives and acted as a barrier to their ability to effectively cope in the world.

Seeing this ignited my desire to venture into the medical field and become a psychiatrist and

nurse practitioner to get a better understanding of people with illnesses and thus assist them.

Transitioning from a degree in social work to pursuing a course in nursing is a natural

progression for me. My experience as a caregiver has instilled in me a deep sense of compassion,

empathy, and a genuine desire to make a difference in the lives of others. Nursing, with its

emphasis on patient care and health, aligns perfectly with my values and professional goals.

Moreover, my background endows me with vital interpersonal and communication skills, as well

as a strong foundation for understanding the needs of vulnerable populations. Thus, this shift to

nursing is a continuation of my commitment to serving society and a logical step to expand my

impact on healthcare and well-being in society.

In addition, the journey to this point, both as an undergraduate in my pursuit of a social

work degree and as a profession, has not been a walk in the park, but that has not stopped me. I

am a mother and a wife. Although my spouse was in the military, financial challenges existed,

especially in relocating up until he was medically discharged, which prevented me from

completing my undergraduate studies as fast as I had wished. I've actively participated in a

number of leadership positions and community service projects throughout my time as a

caregiver and social work professional, many of which have positively impacted individuals and

the community. I've facilitated support groups to provide direction and emotional support to

families dealing with health-related issues. I've also organized outreach programs to link

underserved areas to essential medical services like wellness seminars and immunization clinics.

Through these experiences, I have gained a deeper awareness of healthcare inequities and have

developed my ability to encourage collaboration among various stakeholders in order to improve

the well-being of communities. I plan to use my leadership and service experiences as I move

into a nursing career to continue advocating for the most vulnerable and providing those in need

with high-quality healthcare.

My experience in social work and providing care has enhanced my comprehension of

various populations and their distinct requirements. These encounters have deepened my

awareness of diversity and cultural sensitivity, enabling me to offer individualized care to people

from a variety of backgrounds. Building on this basis, I would like to actively promote diversity

in healthcare settings as I make the move to nursing. My goal is to become an advocate for

marginalized groups by tackling health inequalities and striving for fair and equal access to high-

quality medical treatment. This journey is about actively contributing to the creation of a

healthcare environment that respects and accommodates the diversity of human experiences, in

addition to deepening my understanding.
