Certification process under the ISO standard

1. Understanding the standard (ISO 9001): this involves gaining a thorough understanding of the
established standards. This norm defines the criteria for excellence in quality management and a set
of requirements that must be met to achieve certification. To obtain it, it is necessary to demonstrate
having a validated and established Quality Management System (QMS) within the business.

2. Gap Analysis: Conduct a gap analysis and evaluate to compare the organization’s current processes
with the requirements of the standard. This evaluation will help identify areas for improvement or
deficiencies within the Quality Management System (QMS). It is essential to fully understand the
impacts of certification and identify potential risks.

3. Implementing Your Quality Management System: this refers to implementing a Quality

Management System that should include documented procedures and processes for areas such as
planning, design, production, and delivery of goods/services. Additionally, ISO 9001 requires the
organization to establish a system for document control, ensuring that quality control is properly
documented and monitored. At this stage, it is of great importance to ensure that the provider or
technology consultant has the sector knowledge and experience to support you throughout the
process.

4. Training Employees and Management on ISO 9001: This step is to ensure that both employees and
management are familiar with the requirements of the ISO 9001 standard. Change management is
critical and requires carefulattention. This may involve training sessions or the distribution of
informative materials explaining the standards and expectations. Furthermore, fostering a culture of
quality within the organization is essential to ensure that implemented changes are effectively
embraced and accepted.

5. Submitting the Certification Application: this involves submitting the application to initiate the
ISO 9001 certification process. The application should outline the procedures and processes
implemented to ensure compliance with the standard. It is crucial to provide detailed information and
a comprehensive demonstration that these steps are being implemented across the company.

6. Audit and Certification: the audit and certification is conducted by an accredited external auditor.
The auditor will review compliance with standard requirements to verify that all necessary steps have
been followed to obtain certification. Once approval is granted, the organization will be certified and
can begin to reap the benefits of ISO 9001 certification.

7. Certification Decision

• Audit Report: The auditors prepare a detailed report on their findings, including any non-
conformities.
• Corrective Actions: The organization addresses any non-conformities identified during the audit
and provides evidence of corrective actions.
• Certification Decision: Based on the audit findings and corrective actions taken, the
certification body decides whether to grant the ISO certification.
8. Surveillance Audits

• Regular Audits: The certification body conducts surveillance audits, typically annually, to
ensure ongoing compliance with the ISO standard. These audits help to ensure that the
management system remains effective and is continually improved.

9. Recertification

• Renewal: ISO certifications are usually valid for three years. Before the certification expires,
the organization must undergo a recertification audit to maintain its certification status.
