Amplifier classification
› Three broad classes of amplifiers:

– Inverting amplifiers provide high voltage gain with a 1800 phase

shift: common-emitter and common-source configurations

– Non-inverting amplifiers provide high voltage gain with no phase

shift: common-base and common-gate configurations

– Followers provide nearly unity gain similar to the op amp voltage

follower: common-collector and common-drain configurations

CG and CB Amplifiers
› Both amplifiers have low input resistance
– This is convenient when the source has low series resistance.
Examples are communication circuits where the coaxial cable
has a resistance of 50 W or 75 W or …. and impedance
matching is used.
› Both amplifiers have excellent frequency response
characteristics. More about this in chapter 10.

Transmission lines
• For maximum power
transfer over a transmission
line, the load impedance
should match the line
impedance
• If the impedances are not
matched, standing waves
will develop along the line
which means some of the
power is reflected back to
the source
