DAYS before the 20th anniversary of the Teebane massacre, the widow of one of its victims has said she believes the lives of eight Protestant workmen could have been saved. Jean Caldwell, whose 37year-old husband Jimmy was one of those murdered in the IRA bomb on January 17, 1992, says she believes not enough protection was given to the bus of workers travelling from Lisanelly Army barracks. THE devastated parents of a teenager killed in a car crash are among the participants in a hard-hitting television campaign launched today by the Government, aimed
at cutting the number of deaths on our roads. In powerful messages, those directly affected by carnage on our roads speak of their heartbreak as they recall the accidents that were to change their lives forever. Each of the four new advertisements feature either
the families of the deceased or those who have been braindamaged or left paraplegic by accidents on our roads. The short advertisements which will air tonight for the first time are the latest attempt by the Department of the Environment (DoE), as part of its Crashed Lives campaign,
to improve driver safety. A total of 59 people died in road accidents in Northern Ireland in 2011, while two people have already lost their lives on the Provinces roads this year. The Crashed Lives adverts will initially run until the end of next month. See pages 6 & 7
SIx fire appliances were mobilised last night to tackle a massive blaze at a disused factory in Kilkeel. The Harbour Road was closed because of the fire which was reported at around 7pm and was on the site of the former Tough Glass factory. Newry and Mourne councillor, Henry Reilly, said the fire was a blow to the local community as plans had been under way to accommodate another business in the building.
