Title : Community Integration Concept for Apartment
Design

This project explores the design of an innovative apartment complex that

emphasizes community integration. The goal is to create a living
environment where residents can form strong social connections and engage i
n communal activities. By designing two L-shaped buildings around a
central courtyard, the project fosters interaction and a sense of belonging.
The first building, a G+8 apartment structure, offers a variety of residential
units, while the second, a G+3 community center, provides shared amenities
such as lounges, play areas, and social gathering spaces. This approach not
only enhances the living experience but also promotes a cohesive and
vibrant community. The design balances private and communal spaces,
ensuring comfort and accessibility while encouraging social engagement.

CASE STUDY
Sideway apartments
Shiraz, Iran

Introduction:
The Sideways Apartment is a residential and commercial building located at
the western entrance of Shiraz, Iran. The primary focus of the design was to
create an engaging and harmonious interaction between pedestrians at ground
level and drivers above. The ground floor serves commercial purposes, while
the upper floors are dedicated to residential units.

Architectural Firm
The Sideways Apartment was
designed by Ashari Architects,
renowned for their innovative
and contemporary architectural
solutions. The firm's expertise
in creating engaging designs that
respond to the urban context is
evident in the Sideways
Apartment project
amir hossien ashari 3
Design Concept
The design concept revolves around two distinctive approaches. The ground
floor adopts a neutral appearance in shape and color, fostering a harmonious
engagement with pedestrians and passers-by.This strategy ensures visual
clarity and integration of the commercial area with the urban fabric. The upper
floors, considering the perspective and movement of drivers, feature a design
language that differentiates them from the base

SITE ANALYSIS
The building occupies an area of 1350 sqm at the western entrance of Shiraz.
The site's location along the main boulevard offers high visibility and
connectivity. The analysis identifies the need to manage western sunlight on
the main structure, as well as addressing visibility and light control challenges
on different façade sides

Building Facades:
The primary façade facing the main boulevard features vertical blades that
serve multiple purposes. These blades, angled to favor southern light, manage
sunlight while adding rhythm and vitality to the building's appearance. The
terraced floors facing the street intertwine with the vertical elements, creating
a harmonious texture akin to fabric weft threads.
On the north-western and south-eastern facades, hollow concrete modules
were integrated to address light control and visibility challenges. The porous
appearance of these facades maintains a unified, simple look, with the main
façade serving as the focal point. Versatile square concrete modules were
designed, expandable in various directions, allowing for solid and hollow
states, enhancing the façade's unique texture

Pedestrian and Driver

Interaction
The design of the Sideways
Apartment aims to create
a seamless and visually
appealing experience for
both pedestrians and
drivers. The neutral and
integrated base of the
building ensures a
harmonious engagement
with pedestrians at ground
level, while the differentiated
design language of the upper
floorscaters to the perspective
and movement of drivers,
creating a dynamic presence
along the boulevard.

Recommendation:
1. Community Integration Focus:
- Prioritize the development of communal spaces such as the central
courtyard, community center, and amenities to foster social interaction and
build a strong sense of community among residents.
- Implement diverse social spaces that cater to different age groups and
interests, including lounges, play areas, and multi-purpose rooms.

2. Sustainability and Eco-Friendliness:

- Incorporate sustainable building practices, including the use of energy-
efficient systems (HVAC, lighting), renewable energy sources (solar panels),
and water-saving fixtures.
- Utilize sustainable and non-toxic building materials to promote
environmental responsibility and the health of residents.

3. Accessibility and Inclusivity:

- Ensure all areas of the apartment complex are accessible to individuals
with disabilities by adhering to ADA standards and including features like
ramps, wide doorways, and accessible restrooms.
- Designate specific units and communal areas to cater to the needs of
elderly residents and families with children.

4. Health and Safety:

- Integrate advanced security systems, including CCTV, secure entry
points, and 24/7 on-site security personnel, to ensure resident safety.
- Install fire safety measures, including smoke detectors, fire alarms,
and sprinkler systems, throughout the complex.

5. Functional Design and Efficient Layout:

- Optimize the layout of apartments to maximize natural light, ventilation,
and space efficiency.
- Include a mix of unit types (studios, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, three-
bedroom) to cater to a diverse resident demographic.
- Design a spacious and well-equipped ground floor that includes essential
services such as a lobby, management office, storage, and the animal
processing room.
27
Conclusion:
The community integration concept for this apartment design aims to create a
vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable living environment that enhances the
quality of life for its residents. By integrating shared spaces, sustainable
practices, and thoughtful design, the project not only meets the functional
needs of residents but also fosters a sense of community and belonging.

The central courtyard serves as the heart of the complex, encouraging

interaction and providing a tranquil space for relaxation. The G+8 apartment
building offers a variety of living options, while the G+3 community center
enriches the resident experience with recreational and social amenities.

Through careful planning and adherence to standards and regulations, the

design addresses key aspects of safety, accessibility, and sustainability.
The incorporation of diverse communal spaces ensures that the complex is
not just a place to live, but a thriving community where residents can
connect, engage, and support one another.
