FUNDAMENTALS OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING (BME-101/201)
COMPOONENTS OF IC ENGINES:
1. Cylinder: It is the main part of the engine inside Inlet Valve (M Spark Plug Ehaust Valve (EV)
Iniet Manitold ,Exhaust Manitold
which piston reciprocates to develop power. It should
: high strength to withstand high pressure (upto 75 Air Products

bar) and temperature (upto 2400°C). It is generally

of cast iron & alloy steel. The piston reciprocates Fuel

inside the cylinder & combustion takes place in the

cylinder.
2. Cylinder head: The top end of the cylinder is covered Connecting Rod.
by cylinder head over which inlet and exhaust valve,
spark plug or injectors are mounted. Acopper or
asbestos gasket is provided between the engine cylinder CrankPin
and eylinder head to make an air tight joint. Crank

COMPONENTS OF IC ENGINES:
3. Piston: The piston is a cylindrical part that moves upward Inlet Valve (M Spark Plug Exhaust Valve (EV]
anddownward in the cylinder. The diameter of tthe piston is a Inlet Manifold Exhaust Manitold
bit less than the bore of the cylinder to avoid quick wear of the Air Products
piston surface. The main function of the piston is to compres
the charge and to ransmit the gas force to the connecting rod Fuel
during the power stroke.
4. Piston rings: Piston ring are provided on the piston to provide
a gas tight seal between piston and cylinder wall. 2 types of
rings- compression and oil rings. Compression ring is upper Connecting Rod
ring of the piston which provides air tight seal to prevent
leakage of the burnt gases into the lower portion. Oil_ ring is CrankPin
lower ring which provides effective seal to prevent leaka Crank
the oil into the engine cylinder.

5. Conneeting Rod: It converts reciprocating motion of the pistonnlet Valve(V) ,Exhaust Manifold
into cireular motion of the crank shaft. The snmaller end of the Inlet Manifold,
Air Products
connecting rod is connected with the piston by gudgeon pin and
bigger end of the connecting rod is connected with the crank with Fuel
erank pin. The special steel alloys or aluminium alloys are used
for the manufacture of connecting rod.
6. Crank &Crankshaft: It converts the reciprocating motion of Connecting Rod.
thepiston into the rotary motion with the help of connecting rod.
The special steel alloys are used for the manufacturing of the
crankshaft. Crank is the integral part of the crankshaft. CrankPin Cr
Crank S
Crankshaft is the backbone of the engine.

7. Crank case: The engines cylinder, piston, crank,
erankshaft, connecting rod are housed in the crankease and Inlet Manifold. Exhaust Manifold

also serves as sump for the lubricating oil. The oil level is Air Products

checked with the help of an dip stick or oil stick.

Fual inder
8.Flywheel: it is big wheel mounted on the erankshaft, whose
functionis to naintain its speed constant. Itis done by storing
excess energy during the power stroke, which is returned goon Pin
during other stroke. Connecting Roc inder Blod
9. Spark Plug: t is used in spark ignition engine. It is used ankshaft
toinitiate the spark tor the comtbustion of air fucl mixture in crankPin
petrol engines. It is fitted on cylinder head. Spark plugs
usually require voltage of 12.000-25,000 volts.

Fuel Cylinder
1. Injector/injector is usually used in compresion ignition
engine. It sprays the fuel into combustion chamber at the end of Piston

compressionstroke. It is fitted on cylinder head. In dieselengine on Pl

injector is used on the place of spark plug.
