How My Brother Leon Brought Home a Wife
by Manuel Arguilla
The story begins with Baldo, Leon's younger brother, who is tasked of bringing Leon and his new wife,
Maria, home from the city to their rural village named Nagrebcan.

Baldo is initially skeptical of Maria, a city girl, but is quickly charmed by her beauty and gentle nature.
He observes her as they travel home, noticing her fascination with the stars and her willingness to
touch the family bull, La Bang.

Baldo took the Waig instead of the Camino Real because his father, concerned about Maria's ability to
adapt to their rural life, wanted to test her resilience. The Camino Real was the shorter and easier
path, while the Waig was a longer, more challenging route through the fields.

The father believed that the Waig would provide a more realistic test of Maria's character. By taking
the Waig, Baldo's father wanted to see if Maria was willing to embrace the challenges and hardships
of rural life. This decision also highlights the father's protectiveness of his family and his need to
ensure that Maria would be a suitable wife for his son. This serves as a test for Maria, designed to
reveal her resilience and adaptability.

Despite the unfamiliar terrain, Maria remains cheerful and even finds beauty in the rural landscape,
singing a song about the star-filled sky. She expresses her admiration for the simple life and the clean
air, contrasting it with the noise and dust of the city.

When they finally arrive home, Baldo reassures his father that Maria is not afraid of the countryside or
their family. Maria is warmly welcomed by Leon's mother and sister, and the story concludes with her
meeting Leon's father, who is impressed by her strength and adaptability.

The story highlights the themes of love, adaptation, and family. Maria's love for Leon motivates her to
embrace a new life and overcome her initial anxieties. Her adaptability and willingness to learn
demonstrate her commitment to her new family. The story also emphasizes the importance of family
bonds and the acceptance of outsiders into the fold.
