FEEDBACK NO. 70

HUNTING OF HP CONTROL VALVE (UNIT 4, KSTPP)

PROBLEM

Hunting of HP control valve No. 2 of unit IV accompanied by shaking of HP secondary fluid and 32 bar fluid
lines of the control valve, noticed.

OBSERVATION

The HPCV-2 was found to oscillate by 2 to 4% as per the control room valve position indicator, even at
constant HP secondary fluid pressure. All the parameters in the control fluid system were normal and the
accumulators were in service.

PROBABLE CAUSE

a) Due to sticking of auxiliary pilot valve.

b) Due to resonance of supporting structure.

ACTION TAKEN

The rotating auxiliary pilot (item No. 14 as shown in the drawing enclosed) of the control valve
servomotor was taken out for inspection. Some scratch marks were noticed on the auxiliary pilot. Due to
these scratches and high spots, the auxiliary pilot valve, the control valve was not moving smoothly.
Shaking of fluid pipeline associated with HPCV-2 was also caused by the oscillation of control valve 2. the
auxiliary pilot was polished and the high spots were removed. Care was taken to preserve the sharp
edges, of the pilot.

Performance of the control valve became normal after polishing and reassembling the aux. Pilot. Shaking
of associated pipelines also stopped after this corrective action.

REMARKS

Similar problem was faced with HPCV-4 of unit IV later on and it was corrected by polishing the auxiliary
pilot of control valve servomotor.
