1. Write a historically defensible thesis statement to respond to the prompt.
Industrialization and the Enlightenment changed economic systems, by producing new ideas and machines
that allowed for change in economic systems.

2. Use evidence from the excerpt to support your thesis.


Through the enlightenment, new ideas were formed. People realized that they should be supporting
themselves before others, however they did not realize that by supporting themselves, they were
supporting a different cause, one that they did not know they were supporting. All of this shifting of
wealth and support causes changes in the economic systems.
3. Use a piece of evidence that is not in the excerpt to support your thesis.
The industrial revolution produced a lot of machinery, however many people were still forced to work.
People were needed to build the machines, and even when the machine was being used, it would work
alongside other people instead of doing the work for other people. Due to this, people still had to be paid fro
their labor, changing the economy.

The industrial revolution forced people to work long grueling days at very young ages.

5. Use evidence from the interview with Matthew Crabtree to support your thesis.
Matthew Crabtree states that he was working 14 and 16 hour days when he was 8. This shows just
how young people were when they started working for long periods of time.

6. Use evidence from the source on the 1833 Factory act to support your thesis.
The fact that a law had to be created limiting the age and time a person could work goes to show
just how much the industrial revolution changed the way society thought about child labor.

7. Use evidence that is not in either of the sources to support your thesis.
Photos and texts from the Industrial revolution time period often tell of young children being hired
because they are small and can do things grown people cannot do. Young people could also be paid
very little (for the same work) compared to adults.
