Unit 11:
On A Business Trip
Session objectives
1. Identify and practice the
present progressive in
statements.
2. Practice vocabulary
associated with the topic of
hotels.
3. Use the present progressive
and vocabulary in oral and
written production.
Identify samples.
Read the conversation.
Are they talking about the present or the future?

Sorry, I can’t. I’m trying to work here,

but Zoe is playing with my papers.

Hi John. What are you doing?

Let’s play GTA!

Sure. My wife is staying at home

to take care of Zoe tomorrow, so
I’ll have some free time.
How about tomorrow?
See the rules.
Use #1
To talk about actions happening
now, at the time of speaking or
around the moment of speaking (not
necessarily at this very moment)

Form: Verb BE + verbING

drink + ing = drinking
watch + ing = watching
listen + ing = listening

Important:
Stative verbs cannot be used in
progressive/continuous form.

Examples: like, know, want, have (have

expressing possession)
Use #2
To talk about a definite plan or
arrangement that has been made
previously.
Example
I’m playing tennis with Tom tomorrow.
We’re leaving for Atlanta next week.

Note: When we use the present

continuous for future arrangements, it’s
absolutely necessary to include the time
expression.
Notice:
Paul is watching a movie. (We understand
he is doing the action at the moment of
speaking.)
Paul is watching a movie later. (The
expression of time tells us this is happening
in the future.)
Look at the
structure of the
present
progressive in all
forms.
